Band Meeting Information

Hello Grade 3, 4 & 5 parents,

Here’s a quick update on the band program at Royal Road.  I know a number of you were unable to make the meeting we had on Monday night, so I wanted to ensure that you know what was discussed:

I Introduced Myself

My name is Genevieve MacRae and I am the band director at Royal Road.  I am a flute player by training (Mount Allison University) but I also play piano, guitar, ukulele, clarinet and French horn.  I am not a teacher at the school (or any school).  I have a private studio and I also do the band program at Nashwaaksis Middle School.

We discussed the registration process

Hopefully you have all gotten registration forms.  We have also attached them to this email just in case.  They are due at the office no later than Friday of this week, September 27th.  The band registration fee is $50.  If you wish to rent an instrument through the school there’s another $75 fee.  If your family cannot afford the fee, NO PROBLEM!  I will find sponsorships to cover your fees.

We talked about instrument choices

Students may choose from flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone or percussion.  If you / your child are unsure which instrument you / they want, let me know.  I can help you with making choices!

You can rent from the school or from Long & McQuade. If you rent from L&M, ABSOLUTELY get the insurance they offer.  It’s cheap and VERY worth it.  Each instrument requires some care (valve oil for trumpets, reeds for clarinets & saxes, etc).  If you rent from either the school or L&M, you’ll be started off with the basics.  Clarinet & sax students will need to purchase extra reeds at some point during the school year.  They can be purchased through L&M or Tony’s Music Box.

We talked about books

One of the grants we got last year allowed us to buy a nice new set of books to learn from so this year, each child will be given a book to take home & bring to rehearsal.  These belong to the school and will be returned at the end of the year.  It would be GREAT if they were returned in good condition.  😊

The rehearsal schedule was discussed

Rehearsals will be Mondays & Thursdays during lunch.  Parents will be sent a detailed schedule once registrations are all in and that schedule is made.  Not every child will be needed every rehearsal.  For the first few months, they’ll only need to come once/week.  After Christmas, it’ll be more like three times every two weeks.

First rehearsal / meeting

I will be at the school on Monday for an initial band meeting.  No instruments will be needed for this meeting.  The first rehearsal will be on Thursday, October 3rd for some students and on Monday, October 7th for others.  The aforementioned schedule will inform you of whom at which.

We discussed money stuff

There is no funding for a school band program anywhere in the province of NB.  What this means is that your band program is covered by student fees and by fundraising throughout the year.  We already have one fundraiser under our belts for the year as a few parents from last year signed up to work the 50/50 fundraiser at the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival.  It will take a month or more before we know how much we raised and we won’t likely see that money until January or so.

I threw out a few important dates to mark in your calendars

December 12th is the school Christmas concert.  December 13th is the snow date.

The Fredericton Music Festival takes place the last two weeks of April. Sometime in February/March we will find out the date of our performance in the festival.

We have the Playhouse booked for May 31st for our Little Sprouts Band Benefit Concert as part of the Living Roots Festival.

And then I opened the floor for questions

So if you have any, please send me an email – glmacrae@gmail.com.

I’m looking forward to being your band director again this year and seeing what amazing things your children will be able to do!

Thanks,

Genevieve

Little Sprouts Invitation

Hello, all Royal Road Elementary parents:

The parent band committee has been organizing a concert as our final band fundraiser for the school year in conjunction with the band committee at Nashwaaksis Middle School. This will be held at The Playhouse on Sunday June 2nd at 2pm featuring performances by both school bands as well as special guests Steve Waylon and 8Track Mind. Tickets are now on sale at The Playhouse box office https://www.theplayhouse.ca/event/the-little-sprouts-school-band-benefit-concert/, and this is your opportunity to buy tickets before we start promotions etc. (The Playhouse will be emailing their members this Wednesday, April 3rd).

Following their performance, students will be seated in the balcony; if you wish to purchase tickets nearby, their block of seats show up as being sold. Tickets are $25 for adult and $10 for child, and we hope everyone can come out and help make this show a success.

Gift Card Stocking

Royal Road Families,

Be sure to stop and have a listen to some of our very own Royal Road band students as they perform in the school lobby during parent/teacher interviews Thursday evening and Friday morning. Our students have been working hard and are sounding great!

There will be a donation jar available for our band fundraising efforts AND we will be selling tickets on some amazing Gift Card Stockings that you could win just in time for Christmas.

See you there!

Kangoo Registration

We are very excited to let you know about the Kangoo Club which is being offered for Grade 2 & 3 students over lunch break. There is a poster with a brief explanation and picture for Kangoo Jumps under our documents tab. Please sign the waiver and return to their classroom teacher by November 14, 2018, if you would like your child to participate in Kangoo Club.

Your child will be advised of the schedule once registration is complete.

Thank you to Jamie Leigh Skavlebo for volunteering her time to make this happen.

September 19
Band

Thursday, September 20th at 7pm in the music room for all parents/guardians of students who are interested in participating in the RRES Band. This meeting is to discuss the future of the program and is for parents/guardians only, not students. This year, the band will be open to students in grades 3, 4 and 5.

If you have had a child involved in the band program in the past, you know a little about how things tend to operate. If you have not, below is some information on how the program is expected to go:

Rehearsal Schedule

Your child will participate in a weekly group lesson (sectional) with other students learning the same instrument. Starting in January, these sectionals will become bi-weekly and two bands will be formed (junior & senior) and each will have a weekly rehearsal. In addition, each band (junior & senior) will have one rehearsal per week. Additional supplementary learning opportunities will be scheduled as available. All parents will be sent detailed schedules by email for a couple months at a time.
Band Fees

There will be a fee for participation in band and you will be expected in most cases to provide your own instrument (suggestions on how to rent one will be provided). If your family cannot afford the participation fee or the instrument costs, assistance will be provided. The participation fee only covers a small percentage of having a band specialist teach the program. The remainder of the costs will be covered through fundraising.

Parents will be asked to participate in the fundraisers.

What instrument is right for my child?

We offer instruction on the following instruments: woodwinds (flute, clarinet and saxophone), brass (trumpet and trombone), and percussion (drums, bells, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, etc.). The Band Director will help your child choose a suitable instrument, taking into consideration:

      • Personal preference Students will be asked for their top three choices of instrument.
      • Physical make-up Your child’s physical build may help determine which instrument is best suited for him or her. For example, students whose arms are still short may find a trombone or flute to be too much of a reach.
      • Musical ability – Your child’s strengths will be taken into account. For example, a student who plays percussion needs to have a sense of rhythm to be successful.
      • Balance Making music in a band requires a balance of different instruments. Twenty flutes don’t make a band!
      Parent Involvement

twenty minutes of just "playing" with the instrument.

      Concerts

There will be concerts at Christmas and in the spring. The band will also participate in the Fredericton Music Festival at the end of April. In addition to these performances, there is the possibility of participating in a concert at Nashwaaksis Middle School or having their band participate in one of our performances.
If you would like to talk to someone to help decide whether to enroll your child in the band program, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. T or Ms. MacRae. If you are unable to attend the Sept. 20 meeting please email Ms. MacRae.
