Legs for Literacy News!

Children ages 0-13 are invited to come and join the Legs for Literacy fun on Saturday, October 22nd at Riverfront Park in Downtown Moncton. Children 0-8 and their parents can run or walk a 1 km event and children 9-13 can participate in a 2 km run or walk! All participants will receive a race bib, medal and a free book! All are invited to participate in a Run, Jump, Throw event on site provided by Run NB.

Registriation can be done online here or on site at 9 a.m. on October 22nd. The events will begin at 10 a.m.!

On October 23rd, 3500 or more runners will be participating in the  IGT Legs for Literacy/Courir pour Lire  by running in the 5km, 10km, 21km and the 42KM distances, some will qualify for the Boston Marathon!  They need your help on the route to direct them and encourage them.  Our charity road race event was started in 1999 to raise funds for literacy in Southeast New Brunswick for both Anglophone and Francophone literacy initiatives.  $93,000 was raised last year and a total of $599,000 to date.  AESD has received a large chunk of this money through the years.

When surveying our event participants, the comment that we hear most of all…. “the VOLUNTEERS are amazing!!!”

Volunteers will receive a special long sleeve Volunteer Technical T-Shirt, a chance to win one of many gift cards, and the satisfaction of knowing that you helped a child learn to read.  You could team up with coworkers, family, friends, neighbors to showcase your school! You would be making a special contribution to your community by sharing your skills, your leadership talent and your time!

Our needs:

Volunteers willing to be route marshals to ensure that the runners/walkers stay on course and that vehicular traffic is stopped at locations where runners are crossing the street. There are not very many crossings, postings are mostly directing runners to make turns at corners.  We will provide safety vests and warning flags on a short stick.  You would need a cell phone in case of emergency (runner might need help).   The time frame would be approx. 3 hours.

If you have interest or questions, the attached is our volunteer link  , or you can contact either coordinator as listed.
