The direction for the literacy team for the 2016-2017 school year became very clear. With the obvious gaps in reading, the below grade level results in both reading and writing, the lack of engagement with non-fiction texts from other subject areas, and a need of incorporating technology in our classes, we have started to aim our sights towards the following actions: Fountas and Pinnell benchmarking has begun and with the purchase of intervention kits using F&P to create flex groups in September 2016. IPads and headphones have been purchased with the grant money in an effort to incorporate technology into our library visits and students have begun training in book talks to start filming using a podcaster and shotgun mic also purchased through the grant. We are considering flex grouping based on skills as opposed to grade level focus. Also, some teachers are taking summer Professional Development from the Scottish Right where they will learn about conferencing with students with dyslexia and the goal is for that to be shared in the new school year.

Upon reflection with the Math team, the teachers would like to do probability sooner in the year in an effort to better incorporate the strand. We also want to look at flex grouping further during DSB (Directed Study Block) between teachers, focusing on specific outcomes. The literacy strategy of RACERS will be tried in the new year in the hopes that it will help students understanding when doing word problems. The Number Talks book study will continue and more ideas implemented.

We will also stay committed to communication, collaboration and pursuing a sense of belonging for students. And we want to focus on lesson planning keeping in mind Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and meeting the needs of all students.
