As per New Brunswick Education Act - Regulation 2001-51, the following are eligible for school bus transportation:
- for those public school students who live farther than 2.4 km from their zone school; and
- for those public school students who live 1.5 km down a side road from the closest bus stop location.
Generally, Anglophone East School District provides an enhanced level of service than prescribed by Regulation within existing resources.
The guideline for the number of school bus stops along a route is two stops per kilometer. School bus drivers have the authority to group near-by stops together. Parents are responsible for the safety of their children to and from the school bus stop. School bus drivers also have the right to determine in inclement weather whether to travel on a particular road. School bus routes and stops are subject to change according to the needs of operational requirements.
For those living in the area of parental responsibility around a school, i.e. within 2.4 km, check out the internet for ideas parents in other jurisdictions have come up with (e.g. walking school bus) – groups of parents collectively being responsible for the safety of their children to and from school. More ideas can be found on the Active & Safe Routes to School Website.
