Back to School #2

Good afternoon AES families. Today is Thursday, September 3rd.

You will find attached to this email, our 2020-2021 AES Operational Plan. This document will describe the safety measures we have in place to address many of your concerns I'm sure. The Plan has been prepared, reviewed by district and Health authorities, revised for clarification, and presented and practiced by AES staff. We recognize that there are some areas that will require 'training' and clarification. This Plan is a start. It is 'fluid' - meaning we will make adjustments as is necessary and as the need arises. We appreciate your positive support through this process.

What's new at AES? What a good question!

1.  School Cashnet Online - (not new this year but) we are now asking that parents use this method of payment to avoid the passing of cash as much as possible. You can access this through a link on our school website. School fee this year is $40 and it includes classroom supplies. (Note: individual student headphones would be valuable for technology use in classrooms for grades 2-5, to reduce sharing of class sets)

2. Face Masks - Please see that your child has an appropriate clean face mask every day at school. We have been advised that 'buff masks' and 'mingle masks' are not appropriate as they present a choking hazard and/or are not double-layer cotton.

3. Doorbell/Buzzer system - Yes we now have one! If you have an appointment to enter the school or need to drop something off, proceed to the front door and find the buzzer to the right of the door. Then Smile! Sharon can see you through a mounted camera and can talk to you through the speaker.

4. Welcome - We would like to welcome Mrs. Carmichael who will be joining our staff Tuesday mornings each week to support us in Music class this year. And we also welcomed Mme. Reid who is in for Mme. Carr to start the year.

5. School  - This isn't new but with the increase traffic at the school (parent drop-off & pick-up) I encourage people to be extra cautious of students in the driveway. Parent vehicles can enter the driveway in the morning, but they must still heed the bus rules and stop for the flashing red lights. You cannot pass a bus! After school pick-up should be arranged with homeroom teachers so we know where to find you at the end of the day. Cars can enter the school driveway after school after buses have departed. Thank you for keeping the safety of all in mind.

If you have any questions, you can reach out to me by email or phone.

Back to School #1

Good evening AES families. Today is August 24th and this will be your first AES message of the 2020-2021 school year.

This message is to inform you of the staggered entry setup for AES this Fall. There are many things for us to go over with students and it is easier to do with smaller numbers, so all classes will have a staggered entry. Each class will be split in two so that some students attend on Tuesday, Sept. 8th, a second group will attend on Wednesday, September 9th, and then we will all be in school on Thursday September 10th.

Our homeroom classes this year are: K-Hoyt; K/1-Ravn; 2-Johnson; 3/4-Surrett; 4/5-Carr.

On Tuesday, September 8th we will welcome the first group of students:

  • K-Hoyt – last names A-F
  • K/1 Ravn – Kindergarten only (Mrs. Ravn has contacted the families of her K-students)
  • 2 Johnson – last names A-Mac
  • 3/4 Surrett & 4/5 Carr – Grade 4 only (you will be assigned to your class when you arrive)

On Wednesday, September 9th the second group will come to school (first group will stay home):

  • K-Hoyt – last names G-Z
  • K/1 Ravn – Grade 1 only
  • 2 Johnson – last names Mar-Z
  • 3/4 Surrett – Grade 3 only
  • 4/5 Carr – Grade 5 only

Thursday, September 10th (onward) all students attend.

I know you have many questions about what the expectations will be this year. We are currently working on a site Operational Plan that must be approved by the District and the Department of Health before it can be shared. This will be posted by September 3rd.

Some things you need to know in advance:

  • The K-5 plan is for classes to be a ‘bubble’ that will be maintained throughout the day.
  • All students will be required to have a community mask at school.
  • All students must have water bottles. Drinking fountains will not be available.
  • Teaching assignments have been adjusted to reduce the number of teachers working with each class. (This is particularly important to note because AES Upper Elementary classes have usually had many teachers – not this year).
  • Some lesson delivery may be done outdoors so children must be dressed accordingly.
  • Class materials are being ordered. The student fee (including school supplies) is $40 – due as soon as possible because materials have been purchased in advance.

And lastly, I know the first day of Kindergarten can be difficult (for parents as well as children!), please be advised that you will need to say your good-byes outside this year and it would be best to prepare your child for this in advance.

Public admittance to the building this year will be by appointment only.

April 01
April 1st email

Good morning AES families. Today is Tuesday, April 1st.

Last evening the ASD-S Guidance team sent out an email to all schools' families. It was to detail the services in place for students and families who may need Guidance support over this difficult time. They have set up phone lines for each of the education centers. The HEC number is 506-349-6241. Check the email and/or our school website or the District website to see the letter.

NOTE: Parents should be receiving this message, my message, both by email and voicemail.

IF you are only getting this message by voicemail. There are 2 reasons for this:    1. We DO NOT have an email on file in PowerSchool.

·        all District communications are being sent by email. If at all possible it would be best that you have email. It is strongly recommended that you get an email account.

·        If you sign up for a new account, please send me a message at jayne.bettle@nbed.nb.ca and I will have it added to PowerSchool asap.

           2. The email you provided is no longer active

·        please email me at jayne.bettle@nbed.nb.ca with an active email address

Please check your email regularly. It is important to keep up-to-date.

ALSO If you did NOT get this message by voicemail:

We do not have an up-to-date number in Powerschool. Please notify me by email and give me your current information.

Teachers have been trying to make contact with homes over the last few days and we have a number of homes that we have not spoken with. It is so important that we all stay connected at this time.

Thank you for your time

March 20
DM Letter to Prents - March 20th

Good evening AES families. Today is Friday, March 20.

Please be aware that ASD-S forwarded a letter to all parents from Deputy Minister Daley indicating the Province's plans to close schools until further notice due to Covid-19. This letter will also be posted on our school website if you are unable to open/read it.

In the email from our Superintendent, Mrs. Watson, she states that there will be a re-assessment of this decision the first week of April. In the coming weeks district, school, and provincial leaders will be discussing and working on learning options and materials going forward.

We have been asked not to go into the school as our custodian has worked hard to ensure deep cleaning over the last four days. I have reached out to a few parents regarding medication in the school, if there are any other concerns I can be reached through email jayne.bettle@nbed.nb.ca or by cell 506-647-9914.

Please use good health safety practices and stay safe all.

Thank you for your attention.

February 27
Friday, February 27th

Good evening AES families. Today is Thursday, February 27th.

I am hopeful that each family gets this message as I send it out.

Due to school closure today we have had to look into plans for  our final day of Theme Week. We are able to go forward with most of the planned Winter Carnival activities tomorrow. So students should be prepared for, and properly dressed to, enjoy a number of outdoor activities throughout the day. Note that extra mitts and socks may also be a good idea.

Dressing for inside students can wear sports jerseys or pyjamas, whichever they choose. Just keep in mind that these must be fit to wear under outside clothing.

Stay safe everyone. Thank you for your attention.

January 30
Literacy Friday

Good evening AES families. Today is Thursday, January 30th.

It was great to see so many students today with words to read on their T-shirts. Some were even shared on the morning announcements. There have been special books coming in from home and some wonderful reading moments here at school throughout the week. Staff shared favourite stories with classes that they normally don't spend time with, students really enjoyed reading to younger students while the younger ones very much enjoyed being read to.

Tomorrow the week will wrap up with an assembly for the entire school. PSSC and school funds have been put toward the purchase of more 'Bucket Filling Books' and these will be presented to the new families at AES, so that all families can enjoy and discuss this book at home. And the funds that have come from recycling of juice boxes and cans over the year were used to purchase a number of student-chosen books. These books will be placed in our school library, dedicated to the memory of a long-time school bus driver who passed away last year. Susan Walsh's family will be here for this dedication. A very fitting way to recognize Susan's many years of service to the children of AES.

Thank you for your support of these events this week.

Also, please be reminded that the deadline to purchase a Pink T-shirt is Monday. These T-shirts are only $5.75 and all orders must be in, so that they can be ordered and delivered to the school in time for Pink Shirt Day. No late orders cannot be accepted.
