This is a message from Mrs. Blanchard, Principal at Hampton Elementary School. Here is your weekly edition of the HES Hawk Squawk. We were very thankful to be allowed to open our school today. It is hard to believe the devastation caused by all the flooding. However, the children returned eager to continue their learning journey.
Jump Rope for Heart went home this week. If you are not participating, forms can be returned to the school. Forms and funds raised are due back by Monday, May 14th.
Home and School Reminders: Our next meeting will take place this Tuesday, May 15th in the library.
SPRING BASKET RAFFLE Please remember to send in your items for our Spring Fundraiser this week. We are looking for inexpensive items for your child’s themed class basket. The bins can include anything at all that relates to your theme. We ask that all items are brought in by Thursday, May 17th. Photos of the completed baskets will be shared with families as well as information on ticket purchasing. Below please find a reminder of the class themes:

Hampton Middle School is hosting their Welcome to Middle School Open House for students and families on the evening of Wednesday, May 16th from 6:30-8PM. This is an informal welcoming for any Grade 5 students moving up to the Middle School next year and their families to come view the school, ask questions and meet some of the staff. There will also be a student led tour of the school during the evening.
Author Natasha Pilotte will be visiting with French Immersion classes on Wednesday to share writing strategies with classes and working with students in small groups.
Our Grade 4 students (and some Grade 3 classes) are partnering with the Hammond River Angling Association to create a “Pollination Station” Butterfly Garden on site beginning Thursday with in class lessons. Students will be discussing the value of pollinators (butterflies, bees, birds), the biological needs of pollinators and the threats and challenges faced by local pollinator populations. Students will be helping with the physical building of raised beds for pollinator gardens as well as Planting, maintaining and observing the gardens.
WE BELIEVE SJ: This is an exciting opportunity for our Grade 5 classes to attend Harbour Station on May 17th for the first New Brunswick WE DAY event. One of the main topics at WE Believe Saint John is going to be getting students involved in volunteering in their communities. WE BELIEVE takes place Thursday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and we have about 4500 students on site at this event and the link for the stream is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOgpItkbeqa35Yzw8Od4Ehw/live
Grade 4 Provincial Assessments: The Grade 4 assessments will begin on Tuesday, May 22nd. Students will be assessed in the areas of reading, math and science. Students should be well rested, have a good breakfast, nutritious snacks for school and of course, water!
“I Read, We Read, H.E.S. Reads!” Did you know there are only 5 Fridays left before the end of the school year? At H.E.S we would like to unite with families and the community to boost students’ reading skills. Each Friday, you are welcome to join us from 8:15a.m. until 8:45a.m. to listen to our students reading. Reading aloud helps build fluency, improves comprehension and helps develop critical reasoning. The reader is more invested in the process and is more likely to think about what he or she is saying while reading. More importantly, reading aloud builds reading confidence!
Please find below a message from Ms. Watson, Office of the Superintendent regarding Wednesday, June 6th:
Under the NB Teachers Collective Agreement, all Kindergarten to Grade 8 teachers are to receive two half days each year for report card preparation. The teachers had a half day in November dedicated to preparation of their report cards. The report cards were new to everyone and this time was appreciated. On March 15 the Kindergarten to grade 8 teachers were scheduled to have another half day to help with their preparation of the March 2018 Report Cards. Unfortunately this was a storm closure day across the District. As a result of this, we must adjust our school calendar so there is a half day dedicated for the June report card preparation at K-8. This will happen on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 and on that day it will be an early dismissal day for all K to 8 students. We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause, and we hope by giving a one month notice you will be able to make the necessary arrangements.
Our weekly Hawk Squawk is always posted on our school website under the Synrevoice tab!
