This is a message from Mrs. Blanchard, Principal at Hampton Elementary School. Here is your weekly edition of the HES Hawk Squawk. Tomorrow is the much anticipated Big Fair Day. This is a great event and our Home and School volunteers have worked very hard preparing a day of fun. It will be located on School Street in the field at our school. BIG FAIR DAY is our biggest fundraiser of the school year! There will be a ticket booth selling punch cards at the entrance ($10 for 10 punches). A reminder that socks are required for some of the special attractions. There will also be games where students can earn “Hawk Bucks” which can then be redeemed at the prize table. The event runs from 10-2PM and we will have a BBQ.

This coming week is a very busy week. I have listed as many events as possible at the top of the email in our weekly schedule. I hope I haven’t missed anything. When using sunscreen, we recommend application at home as we are a scent free environment.

Friday Dismissal: On Friday, students will be dismissed at 11:30 with buses leaving shortly after that time.

Grade 5 Bike Rally is Monday: Bike Rally Drop off is 6:30-7:30 PM on Sunday for those parents who want to drop off their childrens’ bikes for the rally. Parents can come up to the front of the school and Mrs. Thorne will be accepting the bikes to store overnight in the courtyard. Please inform your teacher if you will be picking their bike up on Monday after school or if they have permission to bike home at the end of the day.

Milk and Hot Lunch: Today was the final day for hot lunch. Please remember to pack lunches next week. Milk continues for three days next week.

Track and Field Meet: Grade 5 students participating in Track and Field events will be on Tuesday.
2018-2019 School Calendar for next year is now available on the Anglophone South District website and is attached to this email for planning purposes. Also find attached a letter from Ms. Zoe Watson regarding a change to professional learning days (half days are being eliminated).

School Fees 2018-2019 – Parents provided feedback through a school wide survey that they prefer an all-inclusive student fee that included school supplies. What does the school fee cover?
Total Cost: $60 per student

Gr 2 FI and Gr 3-5 English and French Immersion

Amount
Rationale
 $40
This part of the fee covers all student consumable supplies. With ten months of the year, this works out to $4 a month per student and covers: pencils, erasers, paper, notebooks, duotangs, markers, crayons, glue, art supplies. Items such as scissors and rulers are recycled from year to year and are replenished on an as needed basis.
$20
This part of the fee covers student fees for items and performances. For example, students will receive a student agenda ($7), three school performances, ten skating sessions at the Hampton Community Centre in the Fall or Winter as well as two swimming session in the Spring.
Families are required to provide the following:
•2 boxes of tissue
•1 set of inexpensive ear buds/ ear phones (ear phones preferred)
•Indoor sneakers
•1 backpack
•1 lunch bag
***there may be times towards the end of the year when items such as pencils are requested to be replenished.

SUMMER TECHNOLOGY TIPS:
Does your child watch YOUTUBE videos? Did you know?
More and more students are reporting watching YouTube unsupervised. Children are watching their favourite “youtubers” play games such as Granny and Fortnite on YouTube. While the students are not playing these games directly, they are being subjected to inappropriate content. Here is some additional information from a leading parent website Common Sense Media https://www.commonsensemedia.org You can search movies, video games, apps etc on this website:

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW: Fortnite
Is Fortnite appropriate for kids?
For some parents, the cartoonish, bloodless style of the action in Fortnite makes the violence less problematic than the aggressive gore in other popular shooter games. But the game's online chat feature -- especially in Battle Royale -- could expose younger players to offensive language or mature content from random strangers. Common Sense doesn't recommend games with open chat for kids under 13, but with the right controls and parental guidance, this can be a tween-friendly alternative to violent first-person shooters.
What age should kids be to play Fortnite?
Common Sense recommends Fortnite for teens 13 and up, primarily because of the open chat and action violence.

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW: Granny

Parents need to know that Granny is a free-to-play indie horror game with grotesque art, blood, and jump scares that are probably too intense for young kids. The gameplay is challenging as well, even on its easiest setting, which could frustrate some players. Its stealth gameplay features a corpse-like granny who chases the player through a house with a bloody bat. Players who get caught are beaten, and blood spatter covers the screen. Cannibalism is implied, with pools of blood and a hunk of hanging raw meat, but the grainy visuals and art style limits the realism of the gory imagery. Players are also frequently subjected to ads during gameplay. The app has no privacy policy.
