This is a message from Mrs. Blanchard, Principal at Hampton Elementary School. Here is your weekly edition of the HES Hawk Squawk.
Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam was the first to emerge from his lair on Groundhog Day. If a groundhog sees its shadow, it will return to its burrow, indicating six more weeks of winter. If it doesn't go back into hiding, spring will arrive early. Sam failed to see its shadow. Ontario's Wiarton Willie announced six more weeks of winter. Fred la marmotte, the star groundhog in Val d'Espoir, Que., didn't see its shadow.
SAFER INTERNET DAY:
ASD-S will observe Internet Safety Week February 5-9, 2018, and Tuesday Feb 6th is “Safer Internet Day.” The theme this year is "Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you".
Staffing updates: We welcome Kayla Allaby, an education student from UNBSJ. Ms. Allaby is completing her four month internship with Mrs. Kennedy’s class. Mrs. Palmer is continuing in Grade 4 English and Ms. Galley is replacing Mrs. Hill in the Music room.
News from the HOME & SCHOOL: The Home and School meets this week, Thursday, February 8th at 6:30PM in the school library. Discussion topics will focus on a variety of topics. This meeting is always open to new members who want to share their ideas and have an inside look at what is happening at Hampton Elementary. Please take a few minutes to give the Home & School Association feedback through an online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XPBJXKV There will be a draw out of the survey responses for an admission to the February Movie Afternoon and a $5 lunch credit. The survey will be open February 1 to February 7. Thanks in advance for your input.
Raz-Kids: Our school invests in the subscription of Raz Kids for all of our classrooms. This is a great way for students to read books independently and also assess their understanding with quizzes. We have recently unlocked French Books for those students in French Immersion classes. Please check with your child’s teacher for the appropriate teacher log in. We will be monitoring student use over the next month and celebrating those students who are reading at home.
French Immersion Registration: If your child is in Kindergarten, Grade 2, or Grade 5 and you want them to enter the French Immersion program in September 2018, please complete the online registration (deadline was January 30th but the link is still live). Please note: 2018-19 is the final year the Grade 3 entry point for French Immersion will be offered.

What’s happening in the Community?
Athletics New Brunswick is proud to announce the return of the Run Jump Throw Wheel Indoor Series. Last season was the inaugural event for the indoor version of the series and was very popular with over 100 young athletes coming out to compete. It is our hope to continue to build on the success of last season and keep more young athletes involved in the sport over the course of the winter.
The Series will once again consist of several regional RJTW competitions, which are open to all athletes ages 8-13, with the top 8 finishers in each event qualifying to compete in the RJTW Atlantic Championships. The Championship meet will be at UdeM campus in Moncton this year on Sunday, March 11, to coincide with the Atlantic Indoor Championships. The Atlantic Championships will serve as the culmination event of the series.
Athletes are also able to qualify through any school meets/challenges or any other meet hosted by a community group/organization. For interested parties, anyone is capable of hosting a Regional Meet and we encourage schools, recreation organizations and other groups to host a meet/challenge themselves to prepare their athletes for Atlantics. ANB will provide support in the form of an easy guide on running a meet, along with ribbons and qualifying tickets!
