This is a message from Mrs. Blanchard, Principal at Hampton Elementary School. Here is your weekly edition of the HES Hawk Squawk.
BOOK SWAP: As part of National Literacy Day we will be having a book swap. Please send in your previously read novels! On January 27th all students will be able to “shop” for a new to them book.
MILK ORDERS: The milk program is run by the school and all orders are due on Wednesday of this week with payment in cash or cheque payable to Hampton Elementary School.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS: We frequently get asked about the teaching cycle and how it relates to attendance. As an elementary school, classrooms typically introduce new material on Monday. By Wednesday, teachers are checking in to see who might need more help with the particular concepts taught with additional practice occurring throughout the week. On Friday, teachers test to evaluate the outcome. Based on this analysis, teachers determine whether or not the students are ready to build on this material the following Monday. When your child is absent on Friday, they miss the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge. Each day is a valuable learning opportunity in this cycle, including Friday.
News from the LIBRARY: At HES, we LOVE our library! For this reason, we are writing to ask for your help. Overall, 41 books were not returned before the Christmas break making them now at least month overdue. Students, would you please look in your rooms, in your backpack, and in your desk at school.  Parents, would you please look in all those nooks and crannies at home, or perhaps vehicle, where we typically place things until they are returned. We are thanking you, in advance, for your best detective work in finding these missing books!
MANAGING SCREEN TIME: For parents raising kids a decade ago, managing screen time could be as simple as putting the television in the family room and clicking the power button when it was time to move on to another activity. Today, devices are increasingly used in school settings to support learning, and in many other places outside of the home. Plus, the sheer number of apps and devices -- and the fact that many are completely mobile -- can make managing kids’ screen time seem like a nearly impossible feat.   https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/connecting-families/managing-screen-time
EARLY MORNING BREAKFAST/TRANSITION PROGRAM REGISTRATION: We all know that breakfast is the "most important meal of the day" but many of us still don’t get the nutrition we need in the morning. At H.E.S., we currently have bins of breakfast items and fruit in the classroom for a quick “on-the-go” breakfast. In addition to this program we would like to start another opportunity for students from 7:50-8:20AM where we provide toast, cereal and/or oatmeal. Students may choose to come occasionally or on a regular basis beginning Monday, January 23rd and will meet in the breakfast/art room when they arrive. Parental permission is required. We are registering children who are not able to have breakfast at home in this program  as well as students who could benefit from small group conversation to support a positive transition from home to school. If you would like your child to participate, please stay tuned for a registration form.

Our weekly Hawk Squawk is always posted on our school website under the Synrevoice tab!
Have a great weekend!

Heritage Week in NB This year Heritage Week in NB is Feb. 13 – Feb. 20 and the Kings Co. Museum wants to help celebrate by hosting a Heritage Contest for students at local area schools, including Hampton Elementary School.
How students can participate: The Kings Co. Museum has a blog called 100 Hidden Histories which can be viewed at 100HiddenHistories.blogspot.ca. Here’s the task:  students will find an object in their family that is at least 50 years old and write a short story about it.  Here is what should be included:
  • A description of what the object is
  • What is its use
  • Where it was made
  • Who it belonged to (has it been passed down from generation to generation)
  • Why is it still in their family
  • What it means to them
  • Any other interesting fact about the object
All submissions should be submitted in either MS Word or PDF format and be no longer than one page.  Pictures of the object from different angles need to be included as well, including any markings or engravings on the object. There will be one winner from each area school and the prize will be a $25 gift certificate from a local business.  The best submissions will be included in our 100 Hidden Histories blog in 2017.  Other submissions will be shared via our Facebook page.
How to enter: Students must email their work to the museum at kingscm@nbnet.nb.ca by end of day Thursday, Feb. 9.  The following information needs to be included:
  • Student name, School the student attends, What grade the student is in.
  • Name of the student’s homeroom teacher.
  • Email address where the student can be contacted for prize notification.  The Kings Co. Museum will also use this email address to notify students if their submission will be included in our 100 Hidden Histories blog in 2017.
  • The write-up of the object (maximum one page) submitted in MS Word of PDF format.
  • Pictures of the object.
Winners will be notified through the email address they used to send their entry and you will be copied.  Arrangements will be made to have their certificates and prizes presented to them by a member of the Kings Co. Historical and Archival Society.
