This is a message from Mrs. Blanchard, Principal at Hampton Elementary School. Here is your weekly edition of the HES Hawk Squawk. Our word of the week was decorum which means to act with politeness or in an appropriate manner!
The theme of today was Caring for our Earth! We had two grade 4 classes attend a field trip at Crane Mountain learning about where are waste goes to and also about how to minimize the waste by Recycling and Composting. We also welcomed the Gaia Project Waste Audit to Grade 3 Aubin martin were they explored an entire day’s worth of Hampton Elementary Garbage and completed an analysis – they shockingly discovered almost 40% was compost materials, they also discovered two fully packaged apple sauce containers, two uneaten apples, several unopened oranges and more! These students will be sharing their learning all next week on the announcements leading up to Earth day!
PARENT POWER NIGHT: Thank you to those families who were able to attend our first Parent Power Night! We had a great group of dedicated and supportive families who took advantage of this session. Here are some of the key takeaway messages:
·         You are ALLOWED to set limits for your child – YOU are the parent (NEVER give in ‘just one more show’)
·         A great site for screening age appropriateness of apps, movies and games: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/
·         There is a clear connection between excessive technology use, neurological development, social development, anxiety and other behavioural challenges
·         Family meetings are an excellent way to brainstorm limits around technology use

After School Enrichment Opportunities: **NEW** ROBO NORTH AMERICA - http://www.robonorthamerica.com/course/course_01_beginner.php Friday afterschool 2:45-4:45 (2 hours) April 21-June 21 (9 weeks) – cost is $160 + tax = $184 (max. 20 students). This includes 18 hours of instruction, a Robot kit (including $30 microprocessor) & downloadable workbook. See attachment for registration form.

CONGRATULATIONS: We would like to extend congratulations to one of our students Noah Ferris for being the selected designer of the 2017 Hampton Ladies Triathlon Medal! Students are encouraged to register for the Hampton Kids of Steel Splash and Dash happening on the same weekend, Saturday, June 10th. This is a very FUN environment where children are asked to complete a swim and a run based on their age. http://raceeventguide.ca/events/hampton-kids-of-steel-splash-dash/

Home and School News: May’s hot lunch order is due Thursday, April 20th. We encourage families to complete their orders early as no late orders will be accepted. The Home and School meets tonight – Thursday, April 13th at 7PM – all are welcome to attend.

Our weekly Hawk Squawk is always posted on our school website under the Synrevoice tab!
Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Doodle 4 Google Canada!
Doodle 4 Google Canada is a national contest inviting students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 to redesign the logo for the Google.ca homepage for a day.*
As Canada blows out a whole lot of candles for its 150th birthday this year, what better way to celebrate than by asking students to imagine what the next 150 years will look like? Google believes our youth hold the key to a bright future for Canada, and can't wait to see what their optimism, creativity and imagination give rise to.
The winning doodle will be featured on the Google Canada homepage for 24 hours. The winning student will also receive a $10,000 university scholarship, a Google Chromebook, and a $10,000 technology award for their current school along with a trip to the final event on June 13, 2017 https://doodles.google.ca/d4g/
