This is a message from Mrs. Blanchard, Principal at Hampton Elementary School. Here is your weekly edition of the HES Hawk Squawk. Our word of the week was slothful which means one is slow and lazy! Today was a great School Wide Clean Up day in recognition of Earth Day. Students worked around the school to collect garbage, compost foliage in our flower beds and make HES clean again!
Active Transportation: With the nicer weather, we want to encourage students to use active transportation to get to school. It was great to see the bikes come out the last couple of weeks and we know exercise is the most effective way to improve memory and attention at school. Read more here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-athletes-way/201410/8-ways-exercise-can-help-your-child-do-better-in-school  We recently purchased a new bike rack to accommodate even more bicycles!

Student Interns: We are welcoming three UNBSJ student interns this week to observe teachers in our building. We are also welcoming an NBCC student intern who will be learning with Mrs. Madden for the next 6 weeks.

Michelle Brenton, PE teacher at DATL, will be attending the Hampton Sports Registration at the Ossekeag Room on Saturday from 10-12.  She will have information on the upcoming free multi-sport clinics being held for Hampton youth who are interested in a Splash and Dash (swimming and running race) on June 10. Students should be able to swim a minimum of 25m unassisted (length of Hampton pool).
Courtyard Ducks: Our courtyard ducks have returned and were sighted by Mrs. Chase courting once again. If you recall last year, the momma duck nested and ended up hatching her ducklings in the courtyard!

PSSC Meeting: Our Parent School Support Committee will meet on Monday, April 24th at 6:30PM in the school library.

Volunteer Breakfast: On Thursday, April 27th we welcome all volunteers to our Appreciation Breakfast from 7:45-8:45. There will be coffee and treats as well as a short performance by some of our students. This is a small way for us to thank you for your involvement in our school and for all you do!

IT TAKES A VILLAGE PD EVENT: On Thursday, May 4th the PSSCs of the four high schools will host their third and final It Takes A Village to Raise A Teen parent session for the year at Harbour View High.  Attached you will find the information on our Youth Anxiety session for parents and our guest speaker Dr. Daniel Chorney who will provide an informative session on anxiety and parenting strategies.  There will also be a very good mix of professionals from local organizations who provide services for youth who will be on hand before and after to answer any questions specific to access and service.  Some of these include Cdn Mental Health, Gentle Path, Teen Resource Centre, PEER SJ, LINK Program and ISD.  Our target market is of course to the parents of middle and high school students but would welcome parents from any level if they have interest in attending.

Afterschool Activities this week: Wednesday – Mad Science Wk 3, Thursday – Coding Wk 4, and no Robotics this week (next one is May 12th)

Our weekly Hawk Squawk is always posted on our school website under the Synrevoice tab!
Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Doodle 4 Google Canada!
Doodle 4 Google Canada is a national contest inviting students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 to redesign the logo for the Google.ca homepage for a day.*
As Canada blows out a whole lot of candles for its 150th birthday this year, what better way to celebrate than by asking students to imagine what the next 150 years will look like? Google believes our youth hold the key to a bright future for Canada, and can't wait to see what their optimism, creativity and imagination give rise to.
The winning doodle will be featured on the Google Canada homepage for 24 hours. The winning student will also receive a $10,000 university scholarship, a Google Chromebook, and a $10,000 technology award for their current school along with a trip to the final event on June 13, 2017 https://doodles.google.ca/d4g/
