Superintendent’s Message to Kindergarten Parents concerning upcoming Orientation Days for new students.

April 21, 2015

Dear Kindergarten Parents:

As a School District, one of our priorities is to ensure a smooth transition into Kindergarten for the children who will begin school in September 2015.  Many children make this transition very easily; hopefully this was your experience last fall.  In other instances, children struggle with this new situation and take days to settle into school.  We know that the more prepared students and their parents are for Kindergarten, the better the initial experience is for everyone.

During this school year, we have held a parent information night, an evening to distribute and to discuss contents of a “Welcome to Kindergarten” bag for new students and their parents.  Our partner, Family and Child Education Anglophone South, are presently delivering some short-term preschool readiness programs.  All of these initiatives are part of our goal to provide smooth student transitions, and the funding has been provided through the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

As a further initiative to help students prepare for entry into Kindergarten, schools are planning Kindergarten Orientation Days in late April and throughout the month of May.  Your child’s school will inform you of the date for this event.  This will be a day for students to experience some of the classroom routines, to meet with the Kindergarten teachers and to have a bus orientation.  This day will be very beneficial for the students and for the teachers as they get to know the students who will be at their school next year.  Feedback from parents on this activity has been very positive.

As the teachers will be hosting the new students on these days, we are asking that you keep your Kindergarten child home on that day to allow these new students to attend.  In some schools, we would not have enough space if we had the current kindergarten children present on the day the new children arrive.  We also need all of the teachers and support staff who are working in Kindergarten to be available to work with the new children on that day.

I realize that in many cases this will mean making child care arrangements for this day. Hopefully by letting you know early, you will be able to make these arrangements without too much difficulty.

In Anglophone South School District we consider parents our partners and thank you for your ongoing support of education.  We know that together we can continue to improve the learning environment for all of our students.

Yours truly,

Zoë Watson
Superintendent
