Sussex Middle School Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Week

SMS took part in Mental Health Awareness Week a couple of weeks ago. Gwen McNight from the Mental Health had contacted prior to that week to see if my leadership group would like to help out with Kindness Day NB, which was part of Mental Health Awareness Week. We wore the yellow t-shirts that were given to us by mental health , and on Kindness Day the group handed out prizes (stress balls, pens, flashlights,..) to anyone and everyone who showed kindness that day. We spoke about mental health all week. Kids just opened up. We wrapped up the week with Naomie Mahoney, a grade 12 SRHS who has recently come out and is sharing her struggles with her mental illnesses - depression, bipolar, an eating disorder, and on March 22 of this year losing her mom to suicide, spoke to our grade 8s. It was a powerful presentation and our students really connected with her. Youth have the power to removed stigmas associated with mental illnesses. We are preparing to kick off Disability Awareness Week NB (May 31  - June).
