Support for Youth Canadian Chess Champion

"This month, ASDS staff and students participated in a unique fundraiser for Sam Song, the Saint John High school chess star who recently won the grade 9 division of the national scholastic tournament in Quebec City. Sam is going to Windsor, Ontario in July to play in the 2015 Canadian Youth Chess Championship (CYCC), in which the best young players in the country compete for the chance to represent Canada at the World Youth Chess Championship in Greece.

In order to help cover the costs of his trip, SJHS staff organized a “simul” in which Sam would play twenty challengers at the same time, each of whom paid $5 for the opportunity to test their skills against the chess star. The simul was an unqualified success for Sam, who beat all of his challengers, which consisted of Saint John Ed Centre staff and SJHS teachers, staff and students. The first simul drew such an interested crowd that Sam agreed to play a second simul against the onlookers who wanted to try their luck. Sam again came out undefeated.
Sam has a rare talent and is one of the best chess players in the province, regardless of age. We look forward to following his progress at the CYCC next month.
     Good luck, Sam!"
