ASD-S Response to Syrian Refugee Crisis

As you are aware, we have begun to welcome Syrian Newcomers to communities within Anglophone South School District.
Canada has a long history of helping those in need and the Canadian government has pledged to increase its intake of refugees from Syria by 25,000.  As millions of Syrians continue to be displaced due to conflict in their home country the Government of Canada is working with Canadians, including private sponsors, non-governmental organizations, provincial, territorial, and municipal governments to welcome these families to our communities. The ongoing conflict in Syria has triggered the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.
It is with this in mind, that ASD-S is working on a plan to support the integration of children to our schools. We are working closely with the local settlement agency, Y Newcomer Connections, to ensure a smooth transition for these youth. 
ASD-S has established a Language Learning Centre that will allow for student assessment and targeted cultural and language instruction.  This Centre will be centrally located at Prince Charles School and will serve those students who will be living in the Saint John area.  This Centre will provide a temporary, sheltered, common learning area for this particular influx of newcomers and will allow us to effectively respond to this unique situation.
Although we anticipate the largest number of students to be housed in the Saint John area, we know that there will be some families that settle in the outlying areas.  In those schools, we will support these students with EAL (English Additional Language) support and by ensuring that education support structures are in place to respond to individual needs of these students.
Welcoming International Students to our School District is not new to us.  Today, we have over 600 International Students studying in our schools and welcoming the Syrian families will only enhance the diversity we currently experience in our schools.
