National Chess Champion

Congratulations to Ziyuan (Sam) Song, for his win at the recent Canadian Chess Challenge in Regina, Saskatchewan.  Sam is a grade 10 student at Saint John High School.  This is his 6th appearance at the National Challenge, and his second win.

When he’s not representing SJHS on the national stage, Sam is busy supporting younger players’ development in chess.   He founded the “Sam Chess Club” as well as the “Youth Chess Club” for newcomers at the Saint John Multicultural & Newcomers Resource Centre. He wants to give back to the SJMNRC as the organization was very supportive of his family when they first arrived in Saint John. He recently received the SJMNRC “Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award” for his contributions.

Sam will be going to the World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad 2016 in Poprad, Slovakia from July 21st to July 30th as a part of Team Canada. Let’s wish him and his team the best of luck.
