“Stronger Together” – New Seaside Park Elementary School Releases School Song
Seaside Park Elementary School is pleased to announce the release of their new song, “Stronger Together”, celebrating the amalgamation of three west side schools. With the support of an Artist in Residency Grant from the province, the students worked with InterAction School of Performing Arts teachers, Kate Wilcott and Hilary Ladd, and their music teacher, Mary Ann Melvin, to write this song over the past two months. It was recorded last week and aired Thursday morning on CBC Radio One.

“When Krista Turnbull, our Community Schools Coordinator, approached me about applying for this grant in September, I knew immediately I wanted to write a school song with my students,” says Mary Ann Melvin, the Seaside Park music teacher. She continued, “Kate Wilcott worked hard to get our students to think deeply about what our school means to them and Hilary Ladd put their ideas into a catchy tune that they love to sing.”

Each verse of the song describes one important aspect of Seaside Park Elementary School: Education, Clubs and Events, our Community, and our History. Each topic was assigned to one of the four music classes who then shared their ideas with singer/songwriter, Hilary Ladd. Ladd incorporated the school motto “Stronger Together”. Grade five French Immersion students asked if we could include a line in French, and with that, the composition was complete.

More than eighty students gathered in the large music room on Wednesday, April 4, to record the new song. When asked about the recording experience, Zachary Mitchell, grade four student, said, “It was the best day ever because we got to have music for an hour!” The backing track was performed by Hilary Ladd on vocals and guitar, Luc Poirier on drums, and Chuck Teed on bass.  It was produced by sound engineer, Corey Bonnevie. The students look forward to sharing “Stronger Together” with the rest of their school and the public. https://www.dropbox.com/s/m3eormjpb99th43/Seaside%20Park%20Elementary%20School%20-%20Stronger%20Together.mp3?dl=0
