A Healthy Food Environment - Student Conference

Last year the students at Harbour View High School worked with the school cafeteria to revamp their menu and include more healthy options. Today, HVHS hosted a School Food Conference, with students and teachers from five other area high schools.

The conference is an initiative of Horizon Health's Healthy Learners in School program and ASD-S. Student Food Conferences were held for area students at both Hampton High School and Sir James Dunn Academy earlier in the school year, and were designed to help students and their teachers increase their knowledge of food, nutrition, and its influence on our lives.

Different sessions with presentations and activities were held throughout the day giving students the opportunity to learn more about topics such as food security, school gardens, cooking programs, and healthy fundraising, as well as the chance to develop an action plan to help improve their own school's food environment.

There was lots of activity, learning, and fun at this very successful event, not to mention a beautiful lunch made by the Culinary Tech students at HVHS.

A toolbox of resources that support healthy food activities was shared with participants to take back to their high schools to help inspire their healthy food related initiatives.
