PJs for Patients

Rothesay High and Rothesay Park working together to benefit others in memory of a remarkable student

Katelyn Robarts was a truly remarkable individual. While attending grade 6 at Rothesay Park School she was diagnosed with cancer. Kate attended school whenever she was able and when in treatment she was very diligent about completing assignments, volunteering, helping other patients and staying connected with her friends and family. While Kate was at the IWK her favourite gift to receive was pajamas. They made her feel better. They were warm, cozy and new. Kate felt that other children may have similar feelings therefore, she and her family began a program at the IWK whereby children entering her unit would receive a new pair of pajamas. The students and staff at RPS were so happy to hear about Kate’s initiative they wanted to help and began fundraising in support of Kate’s efforts.

Sadly, Kate passed away in the fall of grade 9, after “graduating” from RPS and having won the Outstanding Student Award for high academic achievement, leadership and volunteerism.  In an effort to contribute to the wonderful program Kate began, her RHS classmates and RPS continued to support PJs for Patients. This year, after the two schools fundraised and collected PJs, we began to work together to launder and package the PJs in the manner Kate had established. They are tied with ribbon and include an encouraging heartfelt note from Kate.  RPS and RHS have filled several large plastic totes with pajamas of every size imaginable, ready to be delivered to the IWK. Our program has grown and the IWK is now able to offer PJs to any child who might wish to have them. Kate would have been graduating from RHS this year and even though she is no longer with us her generous spirit is felt among us whenever we give selflessly of ourselves.
