Saint John Medical Society Third Annual Fitness Challenge

May 5 – June 15, 2014

The Saint John Medical Society welcomes the Southern Anglophone School District in participating in our Annual Fitness Challenge. In 2013, your participation made the challenge a great success.

Just as in past years, the challenge encourages participants to be physically active daily and eat an apple a day. Our hope is to encourage everyone to adopt these healthy lifestyle patterns in their daily routines.

There is no fee to enter and registration of teams is quick and easy. EVERYONE is encouraged to participate. This is not just for athletes. All types of physical activity count (walking, dancing, yoga, gardening, shoveling snow – let’s hope not in May and June!). Students, staff and families should all feel welcome to join.

Last year saw several schools win cash prizes to invest in fitness programmes. We will again be offering prizes of $1000 to first place teams in Primary and Middle School, $500 to second place and $300 to third place. Prizes are awarded for highest number of minutes exercise per student so that small schools compete on an even ground with larger schools.

Deer Island Community School was particularly successful last year by establishing a morning walking programme in the school that students, staff and members of the community participated in. They also included an apple a day as part of the school breakfast programme.

Each school should establish a team and decide how they would like to record their minutes. One might collect the number of minutes per classroom and enter on a class by class basis. This would also allow for competition between classes if you wished to set up your own challenge within the challenge. Schools with both primary and middle school level students are encouraged to establish a team for each level. Registering a team and joining a team is simply done by visiting www.sjms.ca and clicking the link to the Fitness challenge. The site is now ready to accept your registration.
