Grand Manan Community School: 1st Annual Volunteer Fair

Grade 9 Personal Development & Career Planning recently held a Volunteer Fair at GMCS.

Various community groups were invited to participate, and the class created presentation boards and table displays for them. Each organization was interviewed to find out about their needs, and how students might get involved as a volunteer.
Groups included Grand Manan Animal Welfare League, GM Fire Department, Rotary Youth, Community Life Church Young Lifers children's program, GM Food Bank, Action Ministry's Thrifty's, Boy's & Girls' Club Breakfast Program and Anglican Church Women.
Each student group was encouraged to give something back to their charity...whether it was giving of their time, fundraising, or spreading awareness. Combined efforts saw over $1000 raised, a van load of second hand clothing/household goods for the thrift shop, and several bags of groceries for the food bank.
The fair was open to other classes (k-12), as well as people from the community.
Door prizes were drawn for one community volunteer, one volunteer group, one visitor, and one of the grade 9 students.
Congratulations especially to Mrs. Marilyn Cary, retired GMCS teacher, who now volunteers non-stop with Action Ministries and the Food Bank, who won our Community Volunteer prize.
We invited all of our visitors (well over 100) to vote for their Fan Favorite organization. Animal Welfare League won the honours, likely for bringing in a friendly cat for people to love. Second place went to the Fire Department, who let everyone try on various pieces of firefighter gear. Third place went to Anglican Church Women, who held a bake sale and silent auctions for 2 yr old Colin Ranson (http://www.caringforcolin.ca/ ).
The community response was tremendous, and many wanted to know how they could have their organization involved next time. I guess this means we will be having a Second Annual Volunteer Fair! The grade 9s thought it was great, as well, but wanted to make sure next year it become a grade 10 project, so they could be involved again.
