​Grade Two Academic Update

April 18 - 27

·      Reading

Students are continuing to work in their guided reading groups. Running records have been completed once again.  Congratulations to all the students on their hard work!  I am seeing it in their reading! 

Some groups have started their first book study. All groups have been working on their reading fluency and expression by rereading a text. Students are being encouraged to read the punctuation – if there is a period you need to stop, if you see a question mark at the end of the sentence, your voice should reflect that.

·      Writing

We have started working on a new genre of writing – poetry. Students are working on writing different forms of poetry including haiku, cinquains, colour poems, acrostic and many more types.  We will put these all together in a Poetry booklet.  The students are really enjoying this unit!

·      Word Work

Students have been introduced to 10 new word wall words.

I know you might be thinking that your child had some of these words in grade one and that is often the case; however, in grade two students are expected to master these words. That means they can read them in a snap and spell them correctly in their writing. (They also need to understanding the meaning of the word. This week we are focusing on the ou/ow sound and the “th” blend.   Some of the other grammar/phonics we are working on are:

·       Adverbs

·       Prefixes and suffixes

·       Antonyms/symonyms

·       Silent k and b

·       Hard and soft g/c

·       3 letter blends – scr, spl, squ, spr, str

·      Math

We are just finishing up our unit of subtraction.  Students have learned 4 different strategies to solve a two 2-digit subtraction problem:

1.     Base ten blocks

2.    Open number line

3.    Hundreds chart

4.    Expanded form

We also solved/created word problems that can be solved with either addition or subtraction.
