News from 2Benoit

June 12                                                         News from 2 Benoit

It is hard to believe that there are only ten days left of school. What a wonderful year I have had with your children! When I think back to September, I remember how small they all looked and now they are ready for grade 3. We have had many memorable moments and some interesting conversations and heard many funny stories.

In math last week we began our unit on geometry by identifying and comparing 2D and 3D shapes.  We discussed the attributes of spheres, cones, pyramids, cylinders, and cubes using the terms faces, edges and vertex – vertices.

Over the past few weeks everyone worked very hard on completing their non-fiction animal booklets and are now ready to have them accompany their projects which are due tomorrow, Monday June 12.The children are very excited to share their work with classmates and other students in the school.

We had a wonderful trip to Mactaquac. Our guided tour took us through a trail in the woods and we saw and learned many interest facts. Our tour ended with an exciting activity – critter dipping! Some of the children caught some interesting creatures. Thank you to the parents who were able to join us.

Now that the warmer weather is here many students are wearing sandals. Please send along a pair of socks to be worn in their indoor shoes – this will prevent blisters from forming. Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to school so they are able to quench their thirst without having to making frequent trips to the water fountain. Fruit and sport drinks will be kept for snacks and lunches.

On Thursday June 15 students in K to 2 will be participating in a field day with outdoor activities led by the grade 5 students and supervised by teachers. Please ensure your child has outdoor shoes – no flip flops please. Sunscreen should be applied at home before school.

The last day for the cafeteria to be open will be this Friday June 16.

This year will be the first ever Gibson-Neill Bike Rodeo held on Wednesday June 21. The rodeo is open to any GNMES students in grades K-5 that want to learn how to safely ride their bike, learn the rules of the road, proper fitting of a helmet, practice their driving skills and show off their bike. A local city police officer will be onsite to discuss road / trail safety.  We will have stations set up, such as:
·        bike safety obstacle courses,
·        bike wash station,
·        bike parade around the school parking lot to show off our bikes.
Date: June 21, 2017
Time: 2:00-3:00
Location: GNMES parking lot
This is an event that is hosted after school – children must be accompanied by an adult.
Please take advantage of the borrow-a-book program offered at the school this summer. On Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM, students from Gibson-Neill Elementary can choose a week’s selection of leveled books for summer reading. This free reading club will start on Wednesday, July 12th and continue until Wednesday, August 23rd.  Please email seth.murphy@nbed.nb.ca to confirm your interest in this program. Please include your child’s name, grade level, and teacher’s name in your message. Thank you for your interest!

Friday June 23 is the last day of school for students and will be a half day with dismissed at 11:30.
