4/5 Bray Weekly Email to families:

 

(Week 6) October 13 - October 26

 

Good morning parent9)/guardian(s) of 4/5 Bray students.

 

Please assist your child with becoming independent at asking
you to assist them with their homework and getting their agenda signed by an adult,
encourage your child to develop the habit of reading a high-interest material
for 15 minutes daily with your support by asking them about what they read.

Homework will be distributed Thursday as many student have
yet to pass in last week’s practice.

 

HOMEWORK:

 

In addition to Reading and responding to Reading, students
will complete some Math Practice which targets their areas for development.

 

DURING WEEK 6 OF SCHOOL, LEARNING WILL FOCUS ON THE
FOLLOWING:

 

Language Arts:

 

Reading:

 

Developing a daily reading habit

 

Learning to find a “good fit” book (good fit books for
personal reading  boxes – you may ask
your child about this

 

Learning how to work with a reading partner, as part of our
Daily 5 Reading Program (ask your child about this)

 

Sharing our Reading likes and dislikes – areas for
developing personal reading skills

 

Learning how to use the Reading CAFÉ – most students chose
to develop Comprehension skills (please note the questions that are included in
your child’s homework duotang for you and your child to practice reading
comprehension).

 

We are focusing on the skill to Predict (predict what will
occur next in a reading)

 

 Writing:

 

Writing conventions for setting up writing on a page: name
and date in the appropriate places on a page

 

Writing response about Orange Shirt Day – October 1st

 

Writing about “resiliency” when faced with a challenging
task

 

 
 

Speaking and Listening:

 

Develop Listening Skills – to teacher and to classmates

 

Develop skills to follow directions and classroom routines

 

Learning the importance of sharing and listening to our
class members’ ideas

 

Develop Listening Skills – via teacher reading aloud of
“Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen

 

 
 

Math:

 

Students are now doing well in Math centers with a focus on
Place Value review

 

Our focus is on Whole Numbers and the specifically Place
Value of numbers: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands). This past week, students
learned and have been practicing a dice game called “knockout!”. This game practices
the operation skills ( addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

 

Science:

 

The elements of the Scientific Method were introduced for
use in student science experiment activities

 

This week, students will observe and record observations of
a Mentos/Diet Coke Rocket launch – ask your child about it.

 

Students are learning to predict the weather and to interpret
weather data.

 

Social Studies:

 

Students are learning to define culture and to provide examples
of culture.

 

Grade 5 students will be learning about archaeology and archaeologists
this week.

 

 
 

French:

 

Students are learning French for two and a half hours a
week. We are currently learning the “Morning Routine” which consists of
understanding how to reply to and, to ask the following questions about: date,
season, weather and temperature. Students have been practicing the following
vocabulary:  numbers 1-100, days of the
week, predicting the weather and interpreting weatherdata.

 

 
 

PDCP (Personal Development and Career Planning):

 

The LSS Guidance Teacher presented an activity on Self-Calming
Techniques to reduce and manage stress.e
