​Grade 2 Week at a Glance (May 13-May 17)

Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Wednesday. 

Nightly Read good-fit books.   Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.   Practice word wall words, sound teams and no excuse spelling words. 

Literacy:  Please continue to practice/review all sight words and Sound Teams. If your child can read all of the sight words, have him/her try spelling them or writing them in a sentence.

Reading: 

Please continue to work on reading comprehension at home by asking them questions about their book such as:  what was the book about, who were the characters, where did the story take place etc. Continue inferential questions-questions where they can’t find the answer in the book-Was there a time you felt the same way as the character? Does this story remind you of another story you read? What do you think the author meant when he said “Oh no, not again” (for example)

Writing:  We will be continuing to study nonfiction writing. Students will learn to write procedural texts that we call “how-to” writing. Students will learn the purpose of this type of writing (to teach others how to do something such as how to make toast), and how it must enable the reader to do what is being taught (steps must be clear, organized, and make sense). 

Math: 

We will be exploring geometry.  Your child will be learning to identify, describe, compare and construct 2D and 3D shapes.  They will also be learning to identify 2-D shapes as parts of 3-D objects in the environment.

Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts (both single digit and double digit), both orally and with paper and pencil.

Practice Facts with answers to 20 and make sure your child is using strategies:

• Counting-on and counting-back in their head (17+3, 20-2, etc.)

·        “Making 10” – For example, for 13+9, take 1 from 13 to make the 9 a 10, and13 is now 12. Now it is easy to solve because12+10 is 22! Students can think about those patterns we noticed on the 100 chart.

• Doubles (7+7, 8+8, etc.)

• Near Doubles (doubles plus/minus 1 and 2). For example, for 7+8, students know 7+7 =14, so 7 + 8 is just 1 more! (doubles plus one).
