Grade 2 Week at a Glance (Nov. 4-8)

Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Wednesday.

Nightly – read good fit book, practice sight words, practice sound teams introduced up to this point.  Students now have the option of reading books online on Raz-kids. The info/passwords were sent home last week.

November Reading Benchmark – In order for your child to meet the benchmark he/she should be reading independently, with good comprehension, books at level H.

Literacy:

Words of the Week:  nice, city, house, how, slow, our

Word Family:  -ip.  How many words can you think of that end with the –ip sound?

Sound Team: Last week we worked on the sound team ow having 2 sounds (how, show). This week we will work on the team ou-which also makes the same sound (loud). Please have your child practice reading: crowd, shout, loud, now, sound

We will learn about soft c (mice, city) (sounds like s sound) this week.  The letter c makes the /s/ sound before e, i, or y.  The letter c makes the /k/ sound before a, o, u, or any other consonant. (card, cow)

Writing:  At this point in the school year, students should be:  using upper and lower case letters appropriately, spelling word wall words correctly, sounding out unknown words phonetically, forming all letters properly/neatly without reversals and consistently using proper end punctuation and finger spaces.

Math: Counting money is a great way to practice and use skip counting.

Have your child count different combinations of coins.  For example 3 dimes, 1 nickel and 2 pennies (if you have any!) etc.

Ask them to show you different money amounts…..Show me 47 cents etc.

You can also practice skip counting by having them count different objects…blocks, noodles, buttons etc.  You can group them with different amounts….show them 2 groups of 10, a group of 5 and 2 loose ones.

Can you skip count by 2 starting on a number other than 2? Start on 12, for example. Start on an odd number….skip count by 2 starting on 9.
