Grade One Home-School Link – Week of May 22nd
HOMEWORK (nightly)
Reading:
“Good-fit” take- home book
Have your child provide a retell of the main events. Look for words containing a sound team and make a list to practice reading and spelling.
Practice all sight words on the grade one list. These will be the “no excuse” spelling words for grade two.
*****June benchmark for reading- Students need to be reading books in level G independently, fluently, and with good
comprehension*****
The grade ones started an ABC countdown last Thursday. Each day we focus on the “letter of the day” by engaging in literacy/math activities and learning about various topics related to the letter.
Each class is also observing caterpillars over the next few weeks as they transform into beautiful butterflies!

MATH FOCUS
-Measurement-describing and comparing length, height, and mass of objects.
-Numbers to 100
Reading and writing numbers
Finding numbers on the 100 chart/line quickly
Naming numbers before and after
Counting forward and backwards between two numbers
Use base 10 units to show how many groups of tens and ones are in a number
-Addition and subtraction facts / strategies to 20
-Solve/create story problems for addition and subtraction
-Creating fact families (3+5=8 5+3=8 8-3=5 8-5=3)
-Estimating quantities by comparing to a given referent (known quantity)

Numbers to 100
-Call out numbers to 100 and have your child print them.
-Say a number and have your child tell you the number that comes before and after.
-Say a number and have your child quickly point to it on the 100 chart/number line.
-***Have your child count forward and backwards from different numbers ( 45-52, 78-88, 87-73, 94-83)without the chart/numberline*****
-Practice fact families 5+4=9 4+5=9 9-4=5 9-5=4
-Read number words:
zero one two three four five six seven eight nine ten
then on to……eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen twenty
- Match numbers that make ten---1+9 2+8 3+7 4+6 5+5 0+10
-Practice facts to 18 using manipulatives if needed
-Adding and Subtracting 1,2 or 3 to a number up to 20….use fingers only if needed.
-Doubles to 18---1+1 2+2 3+3 4+4 5+5 6+6 7+7 8+8 9+9 10+10—answer in a snap!
-Create sentences with sight words/no excuse words focusing on caps, punctuation, printing.
-Practice printing letters/numbers on lined paper.
