Grade 1 Week at a Glance (May 29-June 2)

Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh
Week at a Glance (May 29-June 2)

Tuesday Night:  Pack Library books to be returned Wednesday.  This will be the last week to check out books.

Nightly:
·        Read good-fit books. Have your child provide a retell of the main events. Also, when your child reads a word containing a sound team, point it out to him/her. Try keeping a running list of the sound team words you and your child find in his/her good-fit books to practice reading and spelling at home. *****June benchmark for reading- Students need to be reading books at level G independently, fluently, and with good comprehension*****
·        Practice all sight words and sound teams. If your child can read all of the sight words, have him/her try spelling them or writing them in a sentence.
  • The sight words for grade 1 will be their no excuse spelling words in grade 2. So, they could get a head start!
Reading: Expression
·        Encourage your child to read with expression! Point out how quotation marks mean someone is talking and that we may have to change our tone of voice to match the speaker. Also, be watching for question marks, exclamation marks, and/or words printed in bold or all uppercase letters which usually indicates that the reader should be using expression and/or changing tone of voice.
Word Family:  There will be no new word families.  We will review for the remainder of the year.

Writing:  Non-fiction writing - The students will continue researching information about an animal and writing a report.

Math: Numbers to 100 /Measurement/Geometry
Continue as necessary:
·        Work on number reversals/formation.
·        Work on number line activities.
·        Work on 100 chart activities.
·        Work on before/after…..especially when it involves a new decade, for example after 49, after 89, before 60, before 40 etc.
·        We are continuing our unit on measurement. We worked on surface area-the amount of space taken up by an object and will work on capacity (how much something will hold) as well as mass (how much an object weighs).
Practice Facts with answers to 20 and make sure your child is using strategies:
  • Counting-on and counting-back in their head (17+3, 20-2, etc.)
  • Counting-on and back using fingers (13+5, 18-6, etc.)
  • “Making 10” – For example, for 13+9, take 1 from 13 to make the 9 a 10, and13 is now 12. Now it is easy to solve because12+10 is 22! Students can think about those patterns we noticed on the 100 chart.
  • Doubles (7+7, 8+8, etc.)
  • Doubles plus/minus 1 and 2. For example, for 7+8, students know 7+7 =14, so 7 + 8 is just 1 more! (doubles plus one).
·       We will be beginning our Geometry unit in the coming weeks. Have your child practice recognizing and describing shapes/objects around the house. We use the analogy that “2D shapes are flat and 3D objects are fat”. For example, a ball would be considered a sphere, a die would be considered a cube, a flat sheet of loose-leaf would be considered a rectangle, etc. We will be using words like, roll, stack, slide, curves, edges, points, flat faces, vertices (our new word for corners), when describing shapes such as a cube, cone, sphere, cylinder, etc
·       Visit the following links to listen to some fun Geometry songs with your child:
