Extra Practice over the summer months

·        Grade one High Frequency Sight Words (read and spell). They will need to know how to spell these in grade 2.

·        Sound teams

·        ai   ar  or  ea  ay  ch  sh  th  ee  oa  ou  ow  oo  oi  oy  er  ur  ir  ue  wh  ing  qu  ck  ie

·        bossy e  a___e    e___e   u___e   i___e    o__e

·        Create sentences with sight words/no excuse words focusing on capitals, punctuation, printing.

·        Practice printing letters/numbers. Watch for reversals as well as the size and positioning of letters in the lines

·        Numbers to 100

·        Naming and writing numbers

·        Finding numbers on the 100 chart quickly

·        Naming numbers before and after

·        Counting forward and backwards between two numbers-without looking at the chart

·        Skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s

·        Addition and subtraction facts to 18

·        Create story problems for addition and subtraction

·        Practice different fact families (3+5=8     5+3=8    8-3=5     8-5=3)

·        Read number words:

zero    one   two  three   four   five   six    seven   eight   nine     ten

eleven    twelve   thirteen   fourteen  fifteen  sixteen  seventeen  eighteen nineteen twenty

·        Numbers that make ten---1+9   2+8   3+7   4+6   5+5   0+10 –know in a snap!

·        Doubles --1+1    2+2    3+3    4+4    5+5   6+6   7+7  8+8  9+9 10+10—know in a snap!

 

Bring math and literacy into your child’s daily life when cooking/planning meals, planting, travelling, games, shopping, playing. There's lots of opportunity to practice the skills they have learned. It's important to maintain these over the summer months so they are ready for grade two!
