Grade 2 Week at a Glance (Nov. 20-24)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.

Nightly – read good fit books/Raz-Kids and practice sight words introduced up to this point.

Literacy:

Words of the Week:  junk, off, bug, boy, tell

Please have your child practice reading the words of the week each night.

·       If he/she reads them with ease, try spelling them. You can also have him/her write a sentence using one of the words of the week. Check that he/she is using uppercase letters only when necessary (first word in sentence/someone’s name/word I), leaving finger spaces between words, and using end punctuation.

·       You can create a tic-tac-toe board on a sheet of paper (with one of the words of the week printed in each square and/or any other words your child may have struggled with in past weeks). In order to put an “x” or “o” in a square, he/she must read the word correctly first!

Word Family:  -unk.  How many words can you think of that end with the –unk sound?

Sound Teams:  ea for the short e sound.

Have students read the following words:  thread, head, bread, instead and point out how these words do not follow the 2 vowels go walking rule.

Reading strategies: Expand Vocabulary

This week we will be tuning in to interesting words in the books that we read.  How many interesting words can your child find while reading at home?

Writing:

This week we will be working on word choice by introducing the use of a thesaurus and using more interesting/descriptive words in our writing.  We will also continue to focus on conventions.

Math

We will continue to apply mental math strategies to determine basic addition facts to 18 and related subtraction facts.  Please continue to practice the following at home:

·       Using doubles to 18 (6+6=12 so 6+7 is 13 – just one more than the double).

·       Making 10 (1+9, 7+3)

·       1 more/1 less than a given number

·       2 more/2 less than a given

·        10 is an important benchmark number in math. If they are able to “make” 10, working and regrouping of higher numbers will be easier. For example, we will eventually look at addition to 20.  8+6….they can think-I can turn the 8 into 10 by taking 2 from the 6. Since I took 2 from 6 it is now 10 and 4 and I easily know that is 14. So 8and 6 is the same as 10 and 4!

·        So it is important to know “nice numbers” also called “friends of 10”. You ask..7 and….they quickly tell you 3. You say 5 and…they quickly tell you 5 etc.

·

·

If necessary, please continue to practice the previously listed number sense skills.
