Grade 2 Week
at a Glance (March 19th -23)
Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.
Nightly – Read good-fit
books/Raz-Kids. Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.
Practice word wall words and sound
teams.
In
order to be at benchmark for the April report card, your child must be able to
read and understand texts at level J.
Literacy:
High Frequency
Words: All grade 2 high frequency words (sight words/word wall words) have been
introduced. These are the words your child needs to read in a snap.
Please continue to work on any words your child may struggle with.
The next outcome
is spelling. By the end of grade 2 your child is expected to know how to spell the 103 Grade 2 “No Excuse”
Spelling Words (they are the grade 1 word wall words). Please find this list in
your child’s message bag.
We have been
practicing here at school and we will be assessing them over the following
weeks. Please take the time to work with your child on this outcome.
We will be learning about antonyms (a word or phrase that means the opposite as another word) and synonyms (a word that means exactly or nearly the same as
another word).
Reading strategies: generate &
answer questions
We will continue to generate and answer questions about
fiction and non-fiction texts.
Writing: We
will be studying nonfiction writing. Students will learn to write procedural
texts that we call “how-to” writing. Students will learn the purpose of this
type of writing (to teach others how to do something such as how to make
toast), and how it must enable the reader to do what is being taught (steps
must be clear, organized, and make sense).
Math:
We are continuing our unit on two digit addition and
subtraction. We will be spending a
couple more weeks on subtracting numbers to 100. We will be solving problems with and without
regrouping. An example with no regrouping
is: 34-12 = 3 tens subtract 1 ten = 2
tens and 4 ones subtract 2 ones is 2 so the answer is 22. 34 subtract 10 is 24,take the 2 ones away…22.
An example with regrouping
or trading is 41 – 19 = Before we can
solve this problem students need to recognize that we cannot subtract 9 ones
from 1 one.
We have done a lot of work
on breaking numbers up/seeing them in different ways. They need to see the 41
as 30 and 11….. so the question now becomes 30 and 11(picture it as 3 tens and
11 loose ones) I can now take away the 19….3 tens take away 1 ten is 2 tens…..11
loose ones take away 9 loose ones is 2….2 tens and 2 loose ones is 22!
Another way to think of it
is: 41-19….Think of 19 as 10 and 9.I know 41-10 is 31 and if I subtract the 9
it is 22.
Another way to think about
it is…I know 41-20 is 21 but I only
took away 19 so it is 22.
It is wonderful to see the
students using this “math thinking” and applying their skills!
However, we will continue to practice these strategies
throughout the remainder of the year.
Please continue to practice adding and subtracting one and two digit
numbers with your child.
