Grade 1 Week at a Glance (Sept. 17–Sept. 21)
 
Wow!  It is hard to believe we are into our third week of school.  
 
Wednesday night-Pack library books to be brought back Thursday.
 
Literacy- We are reviewing letters, sounds, segmenting, blending, syllables, rhyming, the 12 K sight words (please see the list that was sent home last week), letter formation, reading strategies.
 
  • We have been working on rhyming and what it actually means-the ending sounds in a word are the same.  This week’s word family is –all.  How many words can you think of that end with –all. 
 
  • Word families help teach the strategy that if I can read ball then I can read fall etc.
 
  • Practice rhyming - Ask them questions such as-what rhymes with……? Does cat rhyme with ring?......etc.
 
  • Review the sounds-m, s, f, b, t, c, a, r. Practice printing these letters.
 
  • Reading strategy - Eagle Eye - Look at the picture for clues. (Remind them to use this strategy when reading.)
 
During our daily Literacy Block, we are continuing to review the “Daily 5” structure.  This structure is dedicated to helping guide the students to work independently on various literacy activities, which, in turn, allows the teacher the opportunity to work with students in small groups with similar academic needs.  We have started reviewing Read to Self, and this week will begin Read to Someone.  Please ask your child what the expected behavior is while they, Read to self, or Read to Someone.
 
We will also introduce the comprehension strategy Check for Understanding.  While we are reading, it is helpful to stop after a page or two and retell the important parts of the book in our own words.  For example:  who are the characters and what has happened so far?  
 
Math-We are working on repeating patterns this week.  How many patterns can you find around your home?  Have your child use household items to create their own patterns.

·        Thank you to those families that have sent in the $25 student fee, student data forms, photo consent forms.  For those who have not, please do so as soon as possible.  If you have misplaced any of the forms, and require another copy, please let me know. Thank you!
·        School Colour Team T-shirt orders due Friday, Sept. 21 (please see notice in your child’s communication bag and school website for more information.)
·        Picture Day takes place on Friday, Oct. 12
