Homework week of Sept.17

Wow!  It is hard to believe we are into our third week of school.

Tuesday night-Pack library books to be returned Wednesday.

Literacy:

This week, we will assess the “No-Excuse” spelling words for grade 1.  These are the 25 words (sent home with your child to practice last week) that the students were expected to spell correctly by the end of grade 1. When their assessment comes home please practice any words from this list that your child is struggling with.

This week, we will also be sending home the grade 2 sight words (High Frequency words) which they will need to know how to read in a snap, by the end of grade 2.  Please keep your copy handy so you can highlight the words of the week and work on these words with your child at home. See separate notes.

Words of the week: Please highlight and practice:  are, black, said, they, to, was, I

We will also be introducing the  - ack      word family this week.

·        How many words can your child think of that end with –ack?

During our daily Literacy Block, we are continuing to review the “Daily 5” structure.  This structure is dedicated to helping guide the students to work independently on various literacy activities, which, in turn, allows the teacher the opportunity to work with students in small groups with similar academic needs.  We have started reviewing Read to Self, and this week will begin Read to Someone and Work on Writing.  Please ask your child what is expected behaviour while they work on these choices.

We will also introduce the comprehension strategy Check for Understanding.  While we are reading, it is helpful to stop after a page or two and retell the important parts of the book in our own words.  For example:  who are the characters and what has happened so far?

Reading Strategy: Eagle Eye - Look at the picture for clues. (Remind them to use this strategy when reading.)

Math:

We will start our unit on patterns.  In this unit, children will be expected to create and extend repeating patterns (PR1) and increasing patterns (PR2), understand the equal sign/unequal sign (PR3), and use the signs = ≠ correctly (PR4).

·        How many patterns can you find around your home?

·        Have your child use household items to create their own patterns.

Reminders/Important Dates:

·        Thank you to those families that have sent in the $25 student fee, and photo consent forms.  For those who have not, please do so as soon as possible.  If you have misplaced any of the forms, and require another copy, please let us know. Thank you!
