Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh
Week at a Glance (Jan. 8-11)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.

Nightly
– Practice sight words, sound teams and read good fit books/Raz-Kids.

Literacy:

Words of the Week:
 be, him, not, will,
·       Practice reading the words
·       If your child read them with ease, practice spelling the words and/or writing a sentence using one of the words of the week.

Reading:  Check for Understanding/Cross Checking
When students read they should be “cross checking”. This is a comprehension strategy that encourages students to always be checking for understanding.  Students should always be asking themselves the following questions – does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?

Sound Team: “ue” (please highlight this on your sound team sheet)
ue makes the same sound as cool and moon and also makes the long u sound as in mule
Practice reading the following words: clue, blue, glue, rescue, argue, value
·       Remember, you can make reading these words (as well as the sight words each week) more engaging by playing a memory matching game, writing words on a tic-tac-toe board, and/or playing “go fish” with word cards.

Word Family: - ide  How many words can you think of that end in ide?

Writing: Small Moments/Editing
·        We will continue to work on small moment/personal narrative stories. Most students still need practice editing for proper punctuation, use of upper/lowercase letters, finger spaces, and overall neatness. Please have your child practice by writing two sentences, and then have him/her back-up and reread his/her writing to edit for the above.

Math:

We are continuing to work on estimating.
Practice skip counting by 2 to 20 and by 5 and 10 to 50.
Before starting formal addition and subtraction we are looking at the meaning of equality as a balance and inequality as an imbalance. The = sign will be reviewed to simply mean each side of the equation is equal (the same). For example, 4+3 “is the same as” 7.
Continue to practice word problems such as:  I need $7 but I only have $3. How do I get from 3 to 7? (this will then translate to 3+_=7?)
·        Review questions such as: 7 is 2 more than what number?
·        My friend has 7 points and I have 4. How many more does she have?

Reminders/Important Dates:
Skating:  Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 10-11 and Tuesday, Jan.  22 from 10-11     Mark your calendars!  We will be going skating these two days.  It would be so wonderful if you could join us to tie skates and help get your child on the ice.  All adults and children will need skates and a skating (not bike) helmet. No strollers or boots are allowed. Gloves must be worn. Please refer to the note sent home before Christmas as well as on the school page.  We are at York Arena this year.
Monday, Jan.28-Professional Learning Day-no school for students.
Thank you for your support!
