Grade 2 Week
at a Glance (Jan. 8 -Jan. 11)

Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be
sent back Wednesday.

Nightly – read
good fit book, practice sight words, practice sound teams introduced up to this
point.  Students now have the option of
reading books online on Raz-kids

Literacy:

Words of the Week:  Review

We will take this
week to review the words we have added to our word wall thus far. Please review
and practice any that your child may still be struggling with. Refer to the
sheet already sent home.

Word Family:  -aw.  How many words can you think of that end with
the –aw sound?

Sound Teams:

Please review all sound teams. (ee,ea,ou etc.)
Refer to sheet sent home previously.

Reading strategies: Check for
Understanding/Cross Checking

When students read they should be “cross checking”. This is a comprehension
strategy that encourages students to always be checking for understanding.  Students should always be asking themselves
the following questions – does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make
sense?

Writing:  Connecting words

We will be learning how to make our writing more fluent by using connecting
or linking words. Students often write short/choppy sentences, however,
connecting words like and, so, with,
but, because
can be used to connect two short sentences, or to add more
detail to a sentence. For example, rather than writing I like sliding. It is fun. Students
can use a connecting word to make a longer more fluent sentence I
like sliding because it is fun.

Math:
Numbers to 100

We
will be revisiting previous outcomes covered, but extending the concepts to
include numbers to 100.

write them with no reversals
identify all numbers to 100
count forward and back from different starting
points
count by 2s, 5s, and 10s forward and backward
from different starting points
order a given set of numbers from least to
greatest and greatest to least
compare two numbers (say which is greater/less
and how they know)
make a number with coins (nickels, dimes,
quarters)

Practice math
facts to 18 (addition and subtraction)
