Grade 2 Week
at a Glance (Jan. 14-Jan. 18)

Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be
sent back Wednesday.

Nightly – read
good fit book, practice sight words, practice sound teams introduced up to this
point.  Students now have the option of
reading books online on Raz-kids

Literacy:

sent home at the start of the year.

Word Family:  -ug.  How many words can you think of that end with
the – ug sound?

Sound Teams: er, ir, ur all have the same sound.
Have your child practice reading: her, dirt,
fur, faster, shirt, curl

Reading strategies: Capital Letters
for Emphasis

We will discuss
how authors sometimes use all uppercase letters to emphasize certain words.
They are encouraged to use this strategy in their own writing.

Writing: Connecting words

We will be continuing to learn how to make our writing more fluent by using
connecting or linking words. Students often write short/choppy sentences,
however, connecting words like and, so,
with, but, because
can be used to connect two short sentences, or to add
more detail to a sentence. For example, rather than writing I
like sliding. It is fun.
Students can use a connecting word to make a
longer more fluent sentence I like sliding because it is fun.

Math:   We will continue to apply mental math strategies to
determine basic addition facts to 18 and related subtraction facts.  Our focus this week will be showing the
relationship between addition and subtraction facts.  For example, if your child knows 7+3=10
(making ten) they should be able to use that knowledge to solve 10-3 = 7 or

10-7=3.
If your child knows 6+6=12 (double) then they should be able to solve
12-6 = 6 quickly.

Also refer to last week’s homework for
outcomes to review.
