Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh

Week at a Glance (Feb. 18-22)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.

Nightly:

Read good-fit books/Raz-Kids. Check for
comprehension by asking your child the “who”, “what”, and “where” of the
stories they read (characters, problem, and setting).

Have him/her provide a retell of the main
events in the story.

Practice Sight Words and Sound Teams.

Literacy:

Words of the Week:  do, just,
one, you
(please
highlight these words on your sheet).

Reading:

This
week we will continue to focus on Comprehension – I
can retell a story
. Please have your child retell the stories they read
at home, as this is an important part of checking for understanding.

We
are also continuing to tune in to interesting words in the stories we read.

Sound Team: Review & Blends

Please continue to review all sound teams.

Students will continue to learn how two
consonants blend together to make one sound. This week we will focus
on: tr,
pr, gr, fr

Have your child practice reading: trip,
print, grade, free, trade, grape,

·        The goal is for students to blend the
two initial sounds together when reading a word, rather than separating them
into their two individual sounds. For example; the word “trip” should be
sounded out as tr – ip” not “t – r – ip”

Word Family: please review
all word families.

Writing:  We are continuing to edit and add details to our stories. They are
experiencing with sentence stretchers and fancy words.

Math: Addition:

Continue
to practice skip counting and addition strategies (see note from last week).

Students
also have been learning how add more than 2 numbers, for example; 3+4+1=

While
looking at these types of number sentences, students continued to use the
strategies we have learned in past weeks. For example, for the question seen
above, we can say 3+4 =7 (near doubles strategy) and
then 1 more than 7 is 8 (1 more than strategy).

Because
the order in which we add numbers does not matter, when solving a question such
as 2+5+5=, students may begin by saying 5+5 is 10(double
strategy) and then 2 more than 10 is 12!

Reminders/Important Dates:
