Grade 2 Week at a Glance (March 25-29)

Tuesday Night
Pack library books to be sent back Wednesday.

Nightly – Read good-fit
books/Raz-Kids.   Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.
Practice word wall words, sound teams
and no excuse spelling words.

In order to be at benchmark for the April report card,
your child must be able to read and understand texts at level J.

Literacy:

All grade 2 high frequency words (sight words/word wall
words) have been introduced.  These are the words your child needs to read
in a snap. Please continue to work on any words your child may struggle with.

The next outcome is spelling. By the end of grade 2 your
child is expected to know how to spell the 103 Grade 2 “No Excuses” Spelling
Words (they are the grade 1 word wall words).
This list was sent home last week
in your child’s message bag.

We have been practicing here at school and we will be
assessing them over the following weeks. Please take the time to work with your
child on this outcome.

Homophones:  We will learn about homophones this week.  These are words that sound the same, but may
be spelled differently and have different meanings.  For example:
they’re, their, there      to,
too, two       wood, would.

Sound Team:oi/oy
Please have your child practice the following words: coin, boil, toy, join, Roy

Reading strategies: We will be looking at text features to
see how authors use them:  italics,
fonts, bold, underline, and capital letters.

We are continuing to write “many moments” stories. So instead of describing one event they
will learn strategies to have a story which includes a few small moments.

Math:

We are continuing our unit on two digit addition and
subtraction.  We will be solving
subtracting problems with and without regrouping.  An example with no regrouping is:  34-12 = 3 tens subtract 1 ten = 2 tens and 4
ones subtract 2 ones is 2 so the answer is 22…..

34-12….34 subtract 10 is 24, take the 2 ones away…22.

An example with regrouping
or trading is 41 – 19 =    before we can
solve this problem students need to recognize that we cannot subtract 9 ones
from 1 one. We are working with many different concrete materials right now
before moving into the mental math part.
