Grade 2 Week at a Glance (April 1-5)

Tuesday Night
Pack library books to be sent back Wednesday.

Nightly – Read good-fit
books/Raz-Kids.   Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.
Practice word wall words, sound teams
and no excuse spelling words.

Literacy:

We will review contractions this week.

Reading strategies: We will continue looking at
text features to see how authors use them:
italics, fonts, bold, underline, and capital letters.

Reading:   Comprehension,
Expression and Fluency

·       Please continue to
check for comprehension by having your child answer questions about the stories
he/she reads, as well as retelling the most important events.

·       Make sure your
child is using punctuation to make their reading more fluent and expressive
(ie; stopping for periods, pausing for commas, using enthusiasm in their voice
for exclamation marks, etc.)

Writing: We are continuing
to write “many moments” stories. So
instead of describing one event they have been introduced to writing a story
which includes a few small moments. I have introduced planning templates to
help organize their thoughts and we have looked at many examples of this style.
This week they will independently write a many moments piece. Please help them
out and remind them/send in 3 things they did this weekend or 3 things they did
on a vacation-went on a plane, went in a museum, went to a beach…

Math:   We have done a lot of work on breaking numbers up/seeing
them in different ways. ….. 41-19….we can’t subtract 9 loose ones from 1 loose
one…..so picture 41 as 3 tens and 11 loose ones….. I can now take away the 19….3 tens take away 1 ten is 2 tens…..11 loose
ones take away 9 loose ones is 2….2 tens and 2 loose ones is 22!

Another way to think of it
is: 41-19….Think of 19 as 10 and 9.I know 41-10 is 31 and if I subtract another
10 the answer is 21-but I didn’t take away 10-I only took 9-so 22!

I know 41-20 is 21 but I only took away 19 so it
is 22.

All of these strategies are
shown with different concrete materials which helps them understand.

It is wonderful to see the
students using this “math thinking” and applying their skills!
