Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh

Week at a Glance (April 8-April 12)

Wednesday Night: Pack Library books
to be brought back Thursday.

Nightly: Read good-fit books
(have your child provide a retell of the main events in the story)

Practice
Sight Words and Sound Teams.

Reading:

This
Week’s Words:
  big,
like, back, did
(these are the last of the sight words for grade 1).

We
will be learning about compound words - two words that go together to make one
word. (ie; butterfly, sandbox, etc.)
Have your child try to find compound words in the books he/she reads.

Please
review ALL strategies for decoding unknown words:

Eagle eye – use
picture clues

Lips the Fish – say
the first few sounds of the word

Stretchy snake –
stretch the word slowly and then put the sounds back together

Chunky monkey – look
for a chunk you know

Flippy Dolphin – if
the short vowel sound doesn’t work, try the long vowel sound, and vice versa

Skippy Frog – skip
the word and read to the end of the sentence, then hop back

Tryin’ Lion – try a
word that makes sense

Writing: details/editing

We
are continuing to work on how to “paint a picture with words”. For example,
rather than saying She was sad try painting a picture in your reader’s mind by
saying Tears streamed down her cheeks.

We are
continuing to add details to our writing, so the reader can create a
picture in his/her mind. To help with this, students are learning how to
work with a partner to peer edit. The person reading their story gives
them advice on how to add a detail so the reader can really “see” the
story.

We are also
continuing to work on writing organized small moment stories and “jazzing”
them up. Did you remember to use a fancy word? Did you try different
sentence starters? Did you add some dialogue? Do you have an interesting
lead?, etc.

Math: Addition
& Subtraction to 20

Review
fact families: Give your child one fact and see if he/she is able to tell you
the three other facts that belong to that family. For example, give your child
the fact 5+3=8. The goal is for
him/her to be able to tell you the other facts in that family: 3+5=8, 8-3=5,

8-5=3. If your child is still
struggling with this, use counters to model the two parts.

We have started to
work more with facts to 20. Please practice facts such as,    18-5,    14+6,    12+_=15,    19-_=14 etc.
