Grade 2 Week at a Glance (April 15-19)

Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Wednesday.

Nightly – Read good-fit books/Raz-Kids.   Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency
and expression.   Practice word wall
words, sound teams and no excuse
spelling words.

Literacy:  We will be reviewing
alphabetical order and will learn how to use alphabetical order to find words
in a dictionary.

Reading:
Comprehension, Expression and Fluency

·       Please continue to
check for comprehension by having your child answer questions about the stories
he/she reads, as well as retelling the most important events.

·       Make sure your
child is using punctuation to make their reading more fluent and expressive
(ie; stopping for periods, pausing for commas, using enthusiasm in their voice
for exclamation marks, etc.)

Writing:

We
will be continuing nonfiction writing. Students will learn to write procedural
texts that we call “how-to” writing. Students will learn the purpose of this
type of writing (to teach others how to do something such as how to make
toast), and how it must enable the reader to do what is being taught (steps
must be clear, organized, and make sense).

We
will also work on Easter vocabulary and writing.

Math:

We are using the make ten strategy to help solve
addition when a double digit number is involved.  Students need to
confidently know the partners of 10 (numbers that add 10). For
example….37+8…..think….37+ what gets me to 40? Take that 3 from the 8, the 8 is
now 5…..40+5 is the same as 37+8…so it is 45!

Practice adding and subtracting at home by
counting money (pennies, nickels and dimes).
Make two piles of coins (adding to $1.00 or less) and have your child
add them up.  Write the number sentence
that goes with the question.  For
example, if you have a pile with 23 cents and you added 2 dimes how much money
would you have now? (23 cents + 20 cents = 43 cents).
