Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh

Week at a Glance (April 15-April 19)

Wednesday
Night:
Pack library books, We missed
library last week.

Nightly:

Read good-fit books (have your child
provide a retell of the main events in the story)

Practice Sight Words and Sound Teams  If your child can read all of the sight words, have
him/her try spelling them or writing them in a sentence.

Reading:

We have
introduced all of the Grade 1 Sight Words.
This week we will be focusing on Easter words.

We have
been studying/reading Robert Munsch books to see how he uses strategies to
help add interest to his writing.
We noticed ellipses…those dots authors use to create drama. He uses
sound words “blam, blam, blam” for a knock or “Whaaaaaaa!” for crying. He
wraps up his story with an ending sentence. Then of course the next step
is to add these strategies to our writing.

We are
continuing to talk about compound words-two words that go together to make
one word...butterfly, sandbox….  As
you or your child reads see if you notice any compound words.

Practice
reading and spelling the following list of words. Keep in mind; students do not have to memorize these words. The goal is to practice sounding out words
with familiar sound teams. Also, spelling does not have to be perfect, but
should make sense phonetically. For example, shouer for the word
shower is a great guess because both these sound teams make the
same sound! Korner for corner is another good
guess! Practice proper letter formation while printing the words (students
should not be making letters backwards
).

to quiz your child on addition and subtraction with answers to 20. Check
that they are using strategies….counting in their head for jumps of 1,2,
and 3, counting on for questions such as 14+6 etc.

Practice
fact families…tell them 6+7=13 and they should be able to tell
you,.,,7+6=13,13-7=6 and 13-6=7

Word
problems…..I found 12 Easter eggs ate 4 and I found 2 more. How many do I
have now?

I have 4
