Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh
Week at a Glance (April 23-April 26)
Wednesday
Night:
Pack library books.
Nightly:
Read good-fit books. Have your child
provide a retell of the main events. Also, when your child reads a word containing a sound team point it out
to him/her. Try keeping a running list of the sound team words you and your
child find in his/her good-fit books to practice reading and spelling at home.
Practice/review all sight words and
Sound Teams. If your child can read all of
the sight words, have him/her try spelling them or writing them in a sentence.
Practice the “no excuse” spelling
words for grade 1. These are the words
that your child should be able to spell by the end of grade 1 (see list in
communication bag).
Reading
.
Please continue to practice
reading/writing the words which were posted last week (if there are any that
your child continues to struggle with). Remember to work on eliminating reversals (backward letters), avoiding unnecessary
uppercase letters, and having neat printing. The grade two teachers will expect
these goals to be met. The following words can be used to practice
spelling and reading at home this week:
cooking
shampoo
blame
flipped
opener
bumpy
planter
In order to meet grade level
expectations on the year-end report card, your child must be reading level G
books independently, with comprehension and fluency. Once your child reaches a
level G/H (or above) in reading, have him/her read some of the book out loud
and some of the book in his/her head, and then have him/her do a retell (they
tell you about the story they have just read.) It’s important that students
understand what they read to themselves, as well as out loud. Guide your child
to tell you about the story with all important details.
Writing:
We have been learning and
writing about ways to care for our environment.
Math:
Please
continue to practice addition and subtraction facts and strategies with your
child, be sure to work with facts to 20.
Have your
child practice counting forwards and backwards between 2 numbers to
50
.
For example, count from 45-52, from 37-30, etc. If they are doing well extend
this to
100
.
Write a
number to 50 and have your child tell you what the number is.
Extend to 100 after this is mastered.
Say a number
and have your child write it (up to 50). Have your child
practice any
numbers he/she writes backwards. This can be extended to 100 as well.
Ask questions
such as;
What comes before 46? What comes after 47?
Etc.
What comes before 86? After 62? Etc
