Grade 2 Week at a Glance (April 29-May 3)

Tuesday Night
Pack library books to be sent back Wednesday.

Nightly – Read good-fit
books.   Reading
out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.   Practice word wall words, sound teams and no excuse spelling words.

Reading:

·
When reading at home with your child,
make sure that he/she is self-correcting. Students are encouraged to monitor
their own reading and to back-up and reread if something does not sound
right/make sense. The goal is for students to be able to do this independently
without needing prompting.

·       Continue to work on reading comprehension with your child by having
him/her answer questions (both literal and inferential – “why do you think the
character acted that way?”) about the books he/she reads. Have your child
respond to books by making predictions about what could happen next, and
by giving his/her opinion on events in the story.

Literacy:  Please continue to practice/review all sight words and
Sound Teams. If your child can read all of the sight words, have him/her try
spelling them or writing them in a sentence.

Writing:  We are experimenting with different forms of writing (How
To, Non-Fiction, Fiction, Poetry, Persuasive etc…)

Math:

We are continuing our unit on
measurement.  Your child will be learning
to

·
Estimate,
measure, and compare lengths using non-standard units, such as paper clips,
straws, snap cubes, craft sticks etc.

·
Estimate,
measure, and compare height using non-standard units.

·
Estimate,
measure, and compare the distance around an object using non-standard units.

·
Estimate,
measure, and compare masses using balance scales and non-standard units.

·
Solve
everyday problems about measurement.

We are also revisiting repeating patterns
(PR1), the
equal and unequal sign (PR3) and learning about increasing patterns (PR2).  (Ex… 1, 3, 5, 7….starts at 1 and
increases/grows by 2 each time)How many different patterns can you find around
your home?  Have your child use household
items to create their own repeating and increasing patterns.

Please
continue to practice addition and subtraction of 1 and 2 digit numbers at home,
with and without regrouping   23+22
=   (no regrouping)    28 + 17 = (regrouping)        45- 22=
(no regrouping)     53 – 17
(regrouping).
