Grade
1 Week at a Glance (May 6-10)

Wednesday Night: Pack
library books.

Nightly:

Read good-fit books. Have your child
provide a retell of the main events. Also, when your child reads a word containing a sound team point it out
to him/her. Try keeping a running list of the sound team words you and your
child find in his/her good-fit books to practice reading and spelling at home.

Practice/review all sight words and
Sound Teams. If your child can read all of
the sight words, have him/her try spelling them or writing them in a sentence.

Practice the “no excuse” spelling
words for grade 1 as necessary.

Reading :  Expression & Contractions

Reading with expression adds interest
to the story for both the reader and the listener. As your child reads, remind
him/her of this. If someone is speaking in the story have your child change
his/her voice. If there is an exclamation mark, remind your child to read with
excitement! Make your voice go up and down, instead of reading with the same
tone the whole way through. When you read to your child be sure to stress your
expression as a role model.

We are reviewing contractions. When
your child is reading, make sure he/she is reading contractions accurately. For
example, not saying “she is” for “she’s”. You can also discuss any contractions you find in your child’s home reading books,
and have him/her tell you the two words that make up that contraction.

Writing:  We will continue
experimenting with different forms of writing (How To, Non-Fiction, Fiction,
Poetry, Persuasive etc…)

Math-Numbers to 100

Please practice number formation! Students should not
be printing numbers backwards. This
also is a major goal for entering grade 2.

Please also continue to have your
child practice skip counting by 2s to 20, and by 5s and 10s to 100.

Over the next few weeks, we will be working with numbers
to 100
.  A hundred chart will
be sent home in your child’s communication bag. Please keep
it in a safe place, as you will be referring to it often.

In
order for your child to become more familiar with numbers to 100, try the
following activities:

Ask
your child how many groups of 10 are in 45? How many single ones are there in 45?

Practice
saying a number up to 100 and have your child print it.

Point
to a number on the hundred chart and have your child tell you the number.

Say
a number and have your child tell you the number that comes before and
after.

Say
a number and have your child quickly point to it on the 100 chart. We will
be doing this in class. Students should begin to realize that if they are
looking for a number in the twenties, they would not look at the bottom of
the 100 chart. The point is to locate a number as quickly as possible.

Play
a game with the 100 chart by covering a number with a coin and having your
child tell you the hidden number. They should be able to do this quickly
by using patterns.

Have
your child count from 45-52, 87-83, etc. This skill is important in
addition and subtraction.
