Grade
1 Week at a Glance (May 13-17)

Wednesday
Night:
Pack
library books to be sent back Thursday.

Nightly:

Read good-fit books. Have your child
provide a retell of the main events. Also, when your child reads a word containing a sound team point it out to
him/her. Try keeping a running list of the sound team words you and your child
find in his/her good-fit books to practice reading and spelling at home.

Practice/review all sight words and
Sound Teams. If your child can read all of
the sight words, have him/her try spelling them or writing them in a sentence.

Practice the “no excuse” spelling
words for grade 1 as necessary.

In order to be meeting grade level reading expectations, students must be reading level G books
independently, fluently, and with good comprehension by the end of June.

Reading:

Continue
to practice the following skills at home with your child:

Using a variety of strategies to
decode unknown words (stretchy snake, skippy frog, etc.)

Checking for comprehension and retell

Working on fluency and expression

Knowing when to stop, pause, and
change tone of voice (depending on type of punctuation)

Writing: Students will be exploring non-fiction writing.  The students will be researching information
about an animal of their choice and writing a report.  We have many books at school, however if your
child has a book at home they would like to use they are more than welcome to
bring it in.  The book should be about an
animal, and have information in it about what the animal looks like, what it
eats, where it lives and other interesting facts.  It is also important that your child is able
to read the text.  Please be sure to
label your child’s book to ensure that it makes it back home.

Please
continue to practice proper letter formation (both upper and lowercase letters)
with your child at home. Watch for reversals (letters printed backwards) as
well as the size and positioning of letters. Many students fail to notice that
lowercase letters g, j, p, q, y should
“hang below” the line and letters b, d,
f, h, k, l, t
should stand taller than the rest.

Math: Numbers
to 100

We
will continue to explore numbers to 100 (counting, noticing patterns,
estimating, etc.). Please continue to work with your child using the hundred
chart which was sent home last week, focusing on the skills mentioned in last
week’s homework.

Practice addition and subtraction
facts, both orally and with paper and pencil.

Work on reversals/proper formation of
numbers to 100

Practice what comes before/after a
given number to 100 (both orally and paper/ pencil)

Have your child quickly find a number
on the hundred chart. Ask him/ her how many groups of 10 are in the number? How
many single ones left over? (58 is 5
groups of ten and 8 single ones)

Have your child put numbers in order from
least to greatest, greatest to least (write 5 random numbers to 100 on
flashcards and have him/her order them).

Practice number stories such as: There
are 4 dogs.
Each has 2 treats. How many treats are there in all?  A
bike rack at school holds 4 bikes. 23 kids bring a bike. How many bike racks
does the school need?
Etc.
