Grade
1 Week at a Glance (May 20-24)

Wednesday
Night:
Pack
library books to be brought back Thursday.

Nightly:

Read good-fit books. Have your child provide a retell
of the main events. Also, when your child reads a word containing a sound team,
point it out to him/her. Try keeping a running list of the sound team words you
and your child find in his/her good-fit books to practice reading and spelling
at home. In order to be meeting grade
level reading expectations, students
must be reading level G books independently, fluently, and with good
comprehension by the end of June.

Practice all sight words and sound
teams. If your child can read all of the sight words, have
him/her try spelling them or writing them in a sentence.

The sight
words for grade 1 will be their no excuse spelling words in grade 2. So, they could get a head start!

Reading: Monitoring and Fixing-up

This week, we will focus on
self-monitoring and “fixing-up” when reading. If something doesn’t sound or
look right, it’s important to back-up, reread, and fix our mistake!

Writing: Non-fiction
(Report)

Students will continue to explore
non-fiction writing.  The students will
be researching information about an animal of their choice and writing a
report.

Math: Numbers
to 100 & measurement

Practice facts and strategies.

As necessary:

Work on number reversals/formation.

Work on 100 chart activities from last week.

Work on before/after…..especially when it involves a
new decade, for example after 49, after 89, before 60, before 40 etc.

We will start a new Measurement unit
in which we will be describing and comparing the length, height, and mass of
objects. Have your child use words like taller/shorter/ longer/ lighter/heavier
to describe and compare various objects around the house.

Choose an object at home (pencil,
paper clip, tissue box, etc.) and have your child find something that is longer
than that object, shorter than the object, and about the same length/height.

Give your child 3 objects and have
him/her order them from shortest to tallest. Then try 3 more objects and order
them from tallest to shortest.
