Grade 2 Week at a Glance (Nov. 25-Nov.29)

Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Wednesday.  (Still no library.)

Nightly- read
good fit book, practice sight words, practice sound teams introduced up to this
point.  Students now have the option of
reading books online on Raz-kids

 Literacy:

Words
of the Week:
when,
who, new, little, have

Please have your
child practice reading the words of the week each night.

Word Family:  -ice
How many words can you think of that end with the –ice sound?

Sound Teams: “ou” for the short u sound.  You will have to add this sound to the
original sound team sheet sent home.

Have students
read the following words:  double, young, cousin, touch, and point out how these words are “rule breakers”.
Rather than making the ou sound that we are used to, as in out, loud, shout,
etc., they make the short u sound.

Reading strategies: Retell

This week we
will be practicing retelling the important parts of a story (characters,
setting, sequence of important events, etc.). Have your child provide a retell
of his/her home reading books when reading at home.

 Fluency:
Although we have been practicing stretching out sounds in words we don’t know,
it is important your child knows that not every word needs to be sounded out.
For example they should know the word wall words which have been sent home “in
a snap.” By reading over these words quickly, without attempting to stop and
show how we can sound them out, can help make students’ reading more fluent.

Writing: Punctuation

This week we
will be reviewing when to use punctuation (periods, exclamation marks, question
marks, quotation marks and commas). Have your child write two sentences about
his/her day and practice using proper punctuation.

Math

We
will continue to apply mental math strategies to determine basic addition facts
to 18 and related subtraction facts.  Please
continue to practice the following at home:

·       Using doubles to 18 (6+6=12 so 6+7 is 13 –
just one more than the double).

·
Making
10 (1+9, 7+3)

·
1
more/1 less than a given number

·       2 more/2 less than a given

If necessary, please continue to practice the previously
listed number sense skills.
