Grade 2 Week
at a Glance (Jan. 20-Jan. 24)

Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be
sent back Wednesday.  (We
have a librarian starting this week.)

Nightly – read
good fit book, practice sight words, practice sound teams introduced up to this
point.  Students now have the option of
reading books online on Raz-kids

Literacy:

Words of the Week:  drink, brothers, were, other, before, sports

Word Family:  -ink.  How many words can you think of that end with
the – ink sound?

Sound Teams:  ue

Students will review that this sound team can make two sounds. It can
make the “oo” sound as in “glue”, or
it can make the “long u” sound as in “argue”.
Please practice reading words such as the following at home: statue, true, tissue, value, due, glue, etc.

Reading strategies: Fiction vs.
Nonfiction

We will be looking
at the difference between fiction and nonfiction by reading and comparing a
variety of books from both genres.

Writing: We will be reviewing all of the writing strategies we
have learned this far.  For example:  using connecting words (and, but, so,
because), transition words or sentence starters (First, Next, Then, Finally,
After, Last,), fancy words, conventions (capital letters, punctuation, finger
spaces etc.), and adding details to support their ideas.

Math:   We
will continue to apply mental math strategies to determine basic addition facts
to 18 and related subtraction facts.  We will
continue to focus on showing the relationship between addition and subtraction
facts.  For example, if your child knows
7+3=10 (making ten) they should be able to use that knowledge to solve 10-3 = 7
or

10-7=3.    If your child knows 6+6=12 (double) then
they should be able to solve 12-6 = 6 quickly.

Please
practice the addition and subtraction concepts with your child. Make sure they are using strategies. These
should be “quick and easy”. We will eventually be doing questions like 49+27
and 92-48 so if they have a good grasp of the basics it will be much easier for
them to move on.
