Grade 2 Week
at a Glance (Feb.3-7)

Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be
sent back Wednesday.

 Nightly
read good fit book, practice sight words, practice sound teams introduced up to
this point.  Students now have the option
of reading books online on Raz-kids

Literacy:

Words of the Week: not, caught, because, favourite

Word Family:  -ot.  How many words can you think of that end with
the –ot sound?

Sound Teams: ou/ow

We will be reviewing the ou
& ow sound teams. Students will review that they can both make the same
sound as in crown and count. However, “ow” can also make the
long o sound as in row and grow.

Have your child practice
reading words with these sound teams, such as the following: how, mouse, outside, shower, loud, know,
blow, our, sour, clown, crow, etc.

We will also be looking at the
suffixes s, es, ies     Have your child
practice reading crows, boxes, clowns, parties, watches, puppies

Reading strategies: retell & summarizing
nonfiction

We will continue to look at nonfiction and will practice
retelling and summarizing the facts we learn in these books.

Writing: Leads

Students are learning how to “hook” their reader by
writing a strong lead (first sentence). We will discuss a variety of strategies
including; question lead, action lead, or
using dialogue.

Math:

We will continue our unit on addition and
subtraction to 100.  In this unit, your
child will be developing strategies for adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers,
with and without regrouping.  We will use
many models such as hundred charts, number lines, and base ten blocks.  Continue to have your child practice adding
groups of 10 to one and two digit numbers and subtracting groups of 10 from one
and two digit numbers.   Adding and
subtracting multiples of ten is a good place to start!  For example ask your child:

 “9 +
40 =, 53 – 30=, 60 + 20= ,  93 –
40=”  It is important that your child is
comfortable skip counting forward and backward by 10’s starting at different
starting points to easily add and subtract two digit numbers.  Please practice this at home.  Ask your child to start counting at 77 and
count back by tens (67, 57, 47, 37), start counting at 3 and count on by 10’s
(3, 13, 23, 33, 43…).
